Developed some play in the BB on my Boardman Pro....am going to have a crack at replacing it myself...while the next few questions may seem stupid...please bare with me as I am a complete KNOB when it comes to maintenance.

The Superstar ones look to be good value, so am considering this - Will it be ok?
http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=23&products_id=447

Also - is it as simple as unscrewing the crank arms, pulling them out, unscrewing and removing the old BB, cleaning, greasing, tightening new one by hand, then with BB tool and finally screwing the crank arms back in?

Am I missing anything such as Do I need a crank extractor tool?

Thanks :?

Yes and it depends on the bb width and if you have any BB mounted kit.

It is all in the SRAM manual if you don't give the info.

Thanks Nick.....by BB mounted kit are you referring to things such as chain guides? I don't have any of those.

was that a yes to it being the correct component or to me needing a crank extractor tool?

normally no as they are self extracting. But......

I've just replaced my BB on my Boardman and used this same SuperStar BB. I had the same questions and got help forum. It's a dead easy job. You can do it in 2 minutes.
The tools you need is either one of these or these. I got the socket one as I could then use my torque wrench.

Firstly you take off the left crank arm. Yes it is self extracting (although I didn't know what it was!). Just unscrew the inner hex bolt which then pushes against the outer hex ring which then pulls off the crank arm. Then remove this side of the BB using either of the tools above. Then knock out the axle (may need a slight tap with a hammer - use a copper mallet of a block of wood to protect the crank). Then unscrew the other side of the BB.
Grease up the crank and new bottom bracket as shown in blue on the SRAM manual. And refit.

I've not yet tried my Superstar BB as my rear hub bearings are now also knackered, so waiting for these to arrive before I can try it.

As for the spacers, my original BB had one spacer on each side and these were the same size as the SuperStar ones. So I refit the same.
The SS BB is a lot lighter too. Mainly due to the tube. I had weighed them both but I've since thrown away the bit of paper I wrote it on.

I can't get the left crank arm off....

I can slightly unscrew the inner with a hex key, but there is an outer cap that requires a larger hex key....thought that may pop off...but no...it seems firmly on, so assuming an unscrew is necessary.

any idea which size that may be??

The inner bolt pulls against the outer and pulls the crank off - self extracting.

Do not undo the outer! The inner can take a LOT of force.

the outer is a 16mm thread

why would you not take the outer off? Are you 100% I should give it a lot of welly and that brute force will solve this!?

Why would you remove the extracting ring?

It is what pulls the arm off.

Have you read the instructions? If you take the outer off, the inner cannot pull against the outer! It can take all your weight to turn the inner.

You're right Supersonic...I was just scared because it was a hell of a lot of force needed.

I am now covered in grease but the owner of a very smooth shiny BB....

    cheers for your help! :D:D
