Can't go wrong with lego for either of those. Whatever set suits your budget.
What is your budget by the way?0 -

Both my girls (4 and 6) love their lego. We got them 2 big boxes of it last year and it's been by far the most played with toy of the year. They were pink lego boxes, come with some pink bricks and a pony and stuff. The beauty of it is that at that age they just throw away any instructions and use their imaginations.
It does really depend on the child though. I know some kids in my eldest daughters class who got nintendo DS last year, they were 4 at the time. Ours wouldn't even know how to turn one on, and I'm quite happy with that. Not to say there is anything wrong with it, I'd just rather ours spent a bit longer playing with dolls houses and lego before moving on to games machines.
It does depend on the kid and your budget.
What I will say though is that if they're not your kids, stay away from messy things and noisy things unless advised otherwise by the nippers parents0 -
