105 or Ultegra?

Hi All
I've recently bought an older model Scott AFD Elite to get myself back into cycling, it has a mixed bag of running gear on it, some Tiagra and some 105. I really like the feel of the bike and the frame is in very good condition so want to hang on to it but upgrade the groupset a bit at a time.

It has 105 hubs, calipers and rear mech which all look in very good condition. The rest is tired Tiagra so I want to upgrade these elements.

My dilemma is whether to upgrade to Ultegra or go for all 105?

Is Ultegra worth the extra money in the long run and can I successfully run a mix until it's all upgraded?

The most pressing items to be replaced are front mech, cassette and chain so these will be first on my list. Then it will be shifters and finally crank and bb.

Any help much appreciated

Ta

I'm guessing your setup but if the Tiagra is 9spd you cannot run a 10spd 105 cassette with the existing shifters.

My opinion - the extra for Ultegra isn't worth it.

Stick with the 105 until you can afford D/A or Red - I know people on here luuurve Shytegra but I've had it on a couple of bikes and found it to be pretty average - much the same as 105 and no where near as good as D/A or Red.

It was actually quite a relief when my Shytegra shifters broke a few months ago on the commuter/winter bike so I had an proper excuse to throw them into next door's garden, as opposed to a normal Yossie excuse - ie convince yourself that you really need to change them even though you don't..

And with the January sales/deals coming up, it could be time to start buying up bits piece meal for a big Spring rebuild .......

Anyway, all mechanical groupsets are only going to start dropping in price as everyone decides they need electronic shifting and Shytegra electronic and the different manufacturers' equivalents start coming out. Soon they'll be paying us to take the stuff away.

Can I run a 10 spd cassette but just won't be able to select all 10 gears?

You need to fit shifters, cassette and chain together. The rest will work fine with 10sp. Unless the front mech is totally shot it can wait. They are the last thing on my list for upgrade.
Yossie may have had a bad time with Ultegra but I have been using it for years with no trouble. The previous 105 had a bad reputation for LH shifter failure. I can not comment on the latest versions. Go for what you can afford.

If you're buying new, I'd go for 10 speed Tiagra, or look for heavily discounted 105 5600 stuff. If you're Ebay shopping go for 105. Mine's been faultless for 3 1/2 years. (make sure you don't inadvertently buy old 9 speed 105)
As John says, the minimum you need to fit is 10 speed shifters, chain and cassette.
