but if you tell him to put the flash on rear curtain the trails from the lights will be behind you thus making it look like you are travelling forward not backwards

ive seen it done like this on purpose before with bike riding shots, i think it looks good as it is.

Yes it does look good as is it's a very nice shot
It's just I think it always looks better with the trails behind the rider making it look like they are moving forward
