I know this is more of a overly concerned MTBers concern....however I feel the need for some frame protection. Money matters mean I can only have 1 bike, so have to use it for commuting.....where leaning on metal tubes, faffing with big d locks and mean uncaring people scraping bikes past your bike means that the frame is going to look sad - paticularly on the seat tube (d lock) and seat stays (leaning on the thing you chain to)
I've posted a link below for helicopter tape. It's VASTLY cheaper than the overpriced lizard skins frame protection etc - what do people think? it's just for the main bits where chaining it up is going to damage the paintwork - the inside of chainstays and down tube and all the rest are going to get stone chips etc, I'm not going to cry about that!
Please DO NOT reply if you want a discussion on whether frame protection is necessary or not!! From experience it is for me
Thanks!

actually it's not that much cheaper looking how much you get! cheeky photo!
oh well, opinions on what frame protection is best still appreciated please!0 -
The tape in your link is just what you need. 3M's polyurethane tape is excellent quality and probably what pops up most often when searching for "helicopter" tape. I like the 2" wide rolls as it's just the right width to cover most frame tubes without being too wide to become difficult to apply or too narrow to provide enough coverage. That's not a bad price but you might find cheaper with a search. Tip; when applying the tape squirt a solution of water and a tiny bit of washing up liquid on the frame surface before laying the tape on. This allows you to move the tape around to position it just right. Then use a towel or rag or ?? to squeegee all the bubbles out and let dry for a few hours and it will dry clear.0

Thanks!
So it's not like sellotape - it dosen't have a sticky surface??0 -
Yes, it does have a sticky surface but it will not be affected by the soap solution once it dries. Wetting the surface first just makes it much easier to apply properly.0

Ahh brilliant, thanks for the tip!0

Had it on my MTB since 2004. And it's still stuck. Lifted in a few places where there are extreme bends. Never tried to pull any of it off. It is brilliant and will protcted the frame. Helps to apply when very warm and then take a hairdryer to it as well to mold it properley to the curves.0

The 3M Heli tape is perfect for the job. Use it on all my bike now.0
