Headset Keeps coming Loose

I have a Specialized Roubaix which I cut one spacer ring off the steerer tube some 2-3 months ago.

I've noticed that I am having to keep tightening the headset after each ride.

What have I done? Or what do I need to do to stop this.

Take the top cap off. Is the steerer tube a few mm down inside the stem or is it flush with the top??

Top cap is probably bottoming-out on the steerer bung or steerer too long. Try refitting the removed spacer above the stem to see if it fixes your problem.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • If your using a STAR WASHER, then get one of these instead:

There's warp speed - then there's Storck Speed
  • This is the least likely reason, but worth mentioning- if the steerer is carbon it may have split along the tube- making it slightly conical- look carefully.

Are your bearings still in good nick?
  • Taking on board all the comments I investigated what was causing the problem. The Specilalized star nut has an internal nut that obviously I had not tightened properly (9Nm) when I gave the fork tube a bit of a trim.

Being the eternal pessimist I managed to worry myself into thinking the frame had somehow split, or I'd wrecked the forks cutting the steerer tube.

But thanks for all the advice.
