OT: Slide/negative scanners

Mrs TGOTB has hinted that she'd like a negative scanner for Christmas. She uses a digital SLR exclusively now, so this would be used for scanning pictures out of her archive. The archive is sufficiently mahoosive, that I don't think paying someone else to do a one-off scanning exercise is a realistic option. No-one in the family is using a film camera any more.
She's a pretty good photographer (does a bit of freelance work for magazines), so we're looking for something high-quality; I don't think a 30 quid job from DX is going to cut the mustard.
Budget is flexible, but I'd prefer not to spend more than a couple of hundred quid. Happy to compromise on speed if it gets the cost down.
Anyone out there have any advice/recommendations?
