Does anyone know what are the differences between the Gore Bike Wear Phantom SO Jacket and the Gore Bike Wear Phantom Neon Jacket other than the colour?

The more clicks I get the higher it creeps up the google radar :)

  • Looking at both on the Gore web site I would say the only difference is the colour

Out of interest how is the jacket? ... looking into getting one myself ... would have preferred the neon/yellow one, but it's 30 quid more than the other colours, so thinking of just going for blue or red.

I was out yesterday in the drizzle and 5 degrees, it's great.

It's so much warmer than my other jacket so I have to choose carefully what to wear underneath or I would melt as taking the sleeves off at the moment isn't really an option.

I'd prefer the neon one too but this was a much better price.

Gore soft shell jackets are great! I use a OXYGEN SO Jacket & have been very pleased with it. Keeps the wind off & is plenty warm enough down to freezing without a base layer. Not used it in any real rain yet, just light drizzle & showers.. so far so good.

£75 @ Wiggle atm to. +1 for being great jackets, have one that's 3 years old and used for road and MTBing and it's still OK (middle pocket has started to come apart though). Only thing's I'd want changed as to add a zip pocket and make the other pockets a bit deeper (a la Assos Airjack 851). They are cut a bit roomier than a lot of roadie softshell jackets so bear that in mind if you're a whippet and don't want flappy arms etc.

I'm looking at the same Wiggle deal but can't work out the correct size. Chest wise I'm 43" which is bang in the middle of XXL, but I want it to be fairly snug and I'm pretty short so maybe XL would be better. What sizes are people wearing?
  • I wear medium in most clothes and went true to size on the Phantom SO, I find the body is nice and fitted but agree with nferrar re the arms not being as slim, particulary the top half (allow my weedy guns!). Superb jacket though, well worth the money.

Edit - just measured my Medium - pit2pit is just under 21 inches and im approx. 40" chest. Looking on wiggle size chart it suggests the Medium is 88 to 94cm chest - even if we use 94 thats only 37 inches so what I'm gibbering on about is I think the jacket is larger than the measurements on the site so go with the XL :D

I'm a 42" chest and my 2 year old Phantom is an XL but it's a tad too big. Have previously tried a Large on in a shop and it was fine so ordered that from Wiggle, also recently bought a Xenon SO in Large and that's a lot snugger fit than the Phantom Large but it's designed that way. I reckon you'd be fine with an XL if you're a 44" chest unless you want something pretty roomy.

that's what attracted me to it ... but i have procrastinated for too long and they're now only 30% off, not 40% damn.

One more question though - is the phantom suitable without a base layer or jersey underneath? I am just thinking that something like the countdown might be better as not as heavy/warm, so could be worn even when a bit warmer, and just put a few more layers on underneath when it's cold.

While i believe that you can never have too many jackets ... the mrs would disagree :-)

Never used mine without a baselayer tbh, would have thought it would be a bit weird. I have used it with just a lightweight summer baselayer (and later had to take the arms off when it warmed up even more than expected). For me it's generally either warm enough to use a windproof baselayer + ss jersey or it's cold enough to switch to a thin baselayer + windproof softshell. I did buy a couple of ls jerseys in the past but never wear them (although I don't suffer from cold arms...)

Sportsshoes.com are selling the neon phantoms for 85 + 5 postage, if you go through quidco you get £10 back.

    Had to get one 8)

Very nice. Wore it in the 1 degree cold this morning with a merino base layer and was perfect.

Aye - I wish I had worn this combo today! I found it too hot a couple of weeks back, but it would have been perfect today. Have sourced a slightly thinner merino base to use with the Phantom now but not tried it yet. Wore what I have been wearing for the last month but got a bit of a shock as it was a fair bit colder...

I see that Evans are doing a good deal on the yellow/black version at the moment - anyone know if this is the same as the neon/black version? Wondering if it's just a branding thing (changing the name to neon), or if the 'yellow' version is significantly different in colour (brightness) to the neon one?

I'm a measured 41" chest and wear the large Phantom. I originally had an XL, but it was way too big for me. The Phantom is quite roomy, so I suspect that you'll be fine with an XL.

It's a fantastic jacket; windproof, very water resistant and warm. I'm happy to go out in 3-4C weather with just a long sleeved base layer underneath.

@Andy - yeah an XL should be fine for you, possibly even an L depending on body shape and how snug you want it. I'm a 42" chest and the XL I have have is a bit roomy so now have an L as well which fits better (I actually also have a M to due to and ordering error and I can get it zipped up OK it's just the shoulders are too tight :p )

The Gore Stores web-site gives a size guide for all the Gore kit, for Phantom look here.

I thought Gore only made Neon jackets last year so any other colour would be a 2010/11 product, still be ok though but might explain the price difference.
They are BRILLIANT jackets - can be worn on their own or with a couple of layers in colder weather.
Not completely waterproof (ok in even heavy showers) but I find them much more comfortable than a waterproof jacket and carry a Montane Featherlite jacket in case it pisses down. The Featherlite comes with a small pouch with a Velcro strap that can be attached to the seat.
