I'm looking to buy the Mrs an MTB for Christmas - budget £250 - could go a bit higher for a killer deal...
I'm happy to go for an end of season 2011 bike, as would get better value for money.
Not fussed about women specific - she's around 5'3" so would need a small (16") frame..
any ideas?

I got my mrs a Specialized Rockhopper with lots of upgrades, for only a little more than that budget. If you know what to look for you will get a substantially better bike for the money.0 -
GT Avalanche is a very good budget bike but would be second hand within you budget, if you can find a disc version then all the better. I sold one for a little more than your budget a while ago. It depends if you've the mechanical aptitude to do any servicing or repairs yourself should it need any.0
