Maxxis Combos

Afternoon all
Since winters a coming, im thinking of swapping out my Ron/Ralph tyre combo for something Maxxis flavoured
Im thinking High Roller at the back, but what for the front ? Minion or Ardent ?
All of my riding is trail centre, so never that muddy, but am considering some more natural riding next year, with perhaps a trip up and down Snowdon, so ideally my tyre choice would do for that as well
Is the softer compound worth the money ? Durability isnt a massive issue since i only get out 1-2 times per month
Do you use Maxxis ? if so, what combo do you use ?
Cheers

High Roller/Ardent0

High Roller front, CrossMark rear - dry-ish
Ardent front, CrossMark rear - dry-ish and a bit faster
Minion DHF 2.5 front, Minion DHF 2.35 rear - wet/mud
Minion DHF 2.5 front, Ardent or HR 2.25 rear - no so wet/mud
Advantage 2.25 front, Advantage 2.1 rear - damp, loose
Ardent 2.4 front, Minion DHF 2.35 rear - enduro-tastic
No probs with any of these. Some people will say there's a lack of grip on Ardents and HRs as you lean over and it's true to a certain extent but the shoulder lugs always bite well before it goes pear-shaped.
60a compound is a decent all-rounder, 42a is the 'grip at all costs' option. 70a a bit skittish.0 -
Minion 2.35 DHF 60a Maxpro front and High roller 2.35 60a Maxpro rear all year round. As .blitz says the HR do give but you can feel it going and control it to a certain degree, Minion is brill point and go grip.0

So i have opted for Minion DHF 60a and had ordered one from Rutland (along with some other goodies). The plan was to test this on the front, shifting the Rocket Ron to the back, however due to an order mix-up, i now have two Minion DHF 60a, so was thinking i could put both on....
I read somewhere online that putting a DHF on the back is fine and that the two together role quite well
Anyone done this ?0 -
Im going same way when my HR wears, the front just hooks up different from the rear, running 2 fronts is brill grip and the way to go.
May be a bit too much grip if you can have two much? I ran mine on the rear for a while and only thing you can't do the same as a HR is getting it sliding as easily, it will still let go but just takes more effort.0 -

The DHF has plenty of grip when used as a rear and rolls better than a DHR.
Would put the Ron in the shed until Summer tbh0 -
What size Minions did you get?0

have the first of the pair
liking the look of the tyre - feels tacky, liking the tread pattern, although doesn't roll in the direction i thought it would from looking at the tread
Two questions - do you have them rolling in the same direction front and back ? and is 60a automatically Maxxpro ?0 -
i have a pair of minons on my hardtail they grip fine in all conditions.
i also have a pair of ardent on my full suss trail bike they to been fine for me.. if not a little drifty in the turnswww.bearbackbiking.com

Summer
ADvantage 2.1 Front Larsen TT 2.0 Rear
Winter
ADvantage 2.1 Front and Rear
Tried the Crossmark front or rear and didn't like it, don't know why really, thinking of trying the Medusa on the rear as its a bit wet and muddy here at present.Every time I go out, I think I'm being checked out, faceless people watching on a TV screen.....0 -

60a is maxxpro auto (i think)
What you running rear HR? you can run it in the wrong direction to the arrow, it climbs better, but it lets go a little easier in the berms (you need to be railing it)
Minion on rear run it right way.0 -

so it runs as per the direction on the tyre ?
Yeap.0 -
Minion DHR is a bit crap frankly... IMO of course but the DHF seems better in every way on the rear. Just plain weird.Uncompromising extremist0

took the minion combo to Llandegla today
for anyone reading this thinking about getting some Minions, do it. IMO they are seriously good tyres. Whilst the Ron/Ralph combo is good, this combo is a different league. They don't roll as well, but the confidence they give far outweighs this. Only slight criticism is that the combo of mud and forest sludge clogged them up for a bit, but this is a very minor criticism.0 -
Just the info I was after. Have been looking to replace my Nobby Nick for the winter and these were on my shortlist. Hope they'r not to slow for XC / Trail use.
Got to stick with my Racing Ralph at the back though!0
