Mudguards for fat tyres

Right you lot. A post in this part of the forum that actually relates to commuting from me.

In brief, my bike has 28mms, which I'm surprisingly keen on, save for the fact I can't get mudguards on it.

If I'm going to commute, now's the time.

But unlike some chaps on here, an amateur human powered enema does not rate highly on my list of preferred commuting experiences.

I tried the SKS raceblades, which were excellent > really good > untill I noticed they were too narrow for my tyres.

So, any other options?

I'm using the narrow version of SKS Chromeplastics with 28c Gatorskins on the commuter and there is plenty of tolerance. You need fixing points on your frame and forks though.
  • when the heck did 28c become FAT?

We kind of need to know bike they're going on to know what will work.... my Tricross has 35/42c 'guards on, which allows me greater cover and the ability to fit 35c CX tyres on when it snows. I'm running THIN 28c conti ultras all year 'round ('cept for the snow days) and they're fine

    If it's not 23mm, it's fat. :P
  • Should fit P35 SKS guards and 28mm tyres no problem.

    the 700c x 20 - 28 mm ones?

    They seem to come in three sizes (that others being 700c x 28 - 37 mm, 700c x 38 - 45 mm)

Yes - I have these with 28mm Gatorskins and there is plenty of tolerance.

    Cheers guys.

Will let you know how the commute tomorrow turns out.

Anything I need to know? I've always commuted in whatever I was wearing and no more than 20 mins, so this commute's a little different.

Any tips on keeping your ironed shirt crease free in your rucksack?

I've tried rolling and I've tried folding. My shirts are always crumpled :)

Speaking of which, would anyone suggest a better route than the one google maps has plotted out for me? I'm thinking mainly at the back end > towards the city.

Would be tempted to stay North of the river, for safer (and more fun) roads.

I roll mine, 5 at a time, and they go in a pannier along with a pair of trousers and 5 sets of underwear. They are very slightly creased when I take them out but after wearing for 5 minutes they look perfect.

    shirts:

lay shirt on floor, fasten top button, smooth out flat.

    fold sleeves onto shirt.

fold each side of shirt in towards middle of shirt on a line with the rear vents at the top.

Put tie (loosley folded) on botton of shirt and roll shirt around tie as far as collar.

    Put in bag.

    for extra uncreasing:

    a) put in sealed freezer bad with som air trapped in.

    b) Buy Tyrwhitt non-iron 100% cotton shirts

That looks like a much more enjoyable option.

If raceblades are ok but too narrow why not these?

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/sks-race-blade- ... guard-set/

Save's the hassle of horizontal dropouts and full guards too.

Yeah, but you're missing the adrenaline rush that is the blackfriars tunnel. Just sayin.
