Mid Layer Advice

Hello

At the moment I have a compression base layer, just a T-Shirt as a mid layer and a GoreTex waterproof. I find the T-Shirt ends up soaked by the end of a ride so wanted something more suitable. I ride XC and will be doing quite a bit of night riding this winter.

Do you have any recommendations for a short sleeve mid layer? Looking to spend about £20-40

Cheers!

Polaris Nomad tops are nice and not too expensive, or Endura Humvee

  • I use baselayer tops from mountain warehouse. cheap, cheerful, and good at wicking away moisture. I wear a baselayer, then the top, and if needs must a jacket. Plus they look like baseball tops, so have a certain air of coolness!

I agree - anything but cotton T shirts.
HAve a look round some bike shops and try some on as some will fit you better than others and there will be nothing worse than having a top hunched under your armpits or not having the right fit on your back.
Constantly trying to upgrade my parts. It is a long road ahead as things are so expensive for little gain. n+1 is always the principle in my mind.

I use cheap thin fleeces. They work a treat, are synthetic, dry quickly and let sweat out.
  • I got the Rab Boreas Mid Layer top just the other week. Although this is not bike specific, it fits very well, is windproof and comes with a hood that fits perfectly under your lid. No need for a seperate skull cap on the cold days. Cost £40.
  • Three layers in Chingford when the temperatures are still in double figures? Do you really need a mid layer? Cotton tees are of no use as said above. Perhaps you are cooking yourself! If you are riding in the small hours fair enough but even then, cycling specific layers are likely to feel and perform better than other stuff.

Anything in merino wool, warm great wicking and doesn't stink after a few rides...
