Just bought some immaculate Shimano Tiagra shifters off ebay - Will they work a triple chainset?
Here's hoping :?

Yes, Tiagra 4500 STI levers will work with a triple chainset. http://techdocs.shimano.com/media/techd ... 607086.pdf0

Thats great thanks for the reply - I thought (well, hoped!!) they would but when they arrived they have the word 'Double' onthe top of the levers which gave me cause for concern.
They are definately 4500's as it is numbered/stamped under the rubber hoods on both levers.
Thanks again,

I'm not sure they will - 4500 l/h shifter should be double, 4503 will be a triple.
Easy way to tell - do they 'click' once or twice in each direction? If they only click once, I don't think they will work on a triple setup.0 -
There are three sets of shifters in the 4500 range - 4500, 4501 and 4503. 4500 and 4503 will work with triple, 4501 will only do double. If your's have double written on them they will be 4501s.0

Thanks guys, i think i might have been 'had over the barrel' so to speak!!
This time i have taken a more thorough inspection - The right shifter is defo' 4500 (Moulded into the plastic under the rubber hood) the left shifter is 4501(sticker under the rubber hood and the word 'Double' on the top plate) albeit....it clicks twice!! - The first click feels a lighter click than the second - could the first click be for trim' ?0 -
Yes, I think so. My LH triple 105 shifter has an extra click in each direction for trim0

A triple shifter will have 4 clicks as there are 5 positions some shift and some trim. The order for my tiagra (4400) is starting from the big ring :-
click - trims
click - drops to middle
click - trims
click - drops to small
on the way back :-
click - trim
click - goes to middle
click - trims
click - goes to big.0 -
Guys,
Thankyou all for your replies, your chat and advise has been of great assistance but there is only one thing to do in my opinion - put it back on eBay & buy a triple!
Perhaps I will pay more attention to detail next time - lesson learned :-)
Thanks again.
