Best sub £150 road wheels?

I'm looking to invest in some slightly faster, lighter wheels and wondered if spending around the £150 mark would get me something noticeably better than my current bog standard Alex rims on my 2007 Allez?

If so, which would you recommend? I've seen a few like the Mavic Aksium, Fulcrum Racing 7 and Campagnolo Khamsin wheelsets etc?

The Campags look amazing for the money with spoke patterns similar to those of wheels 4x the price. I do need my replacement wheels to be strong though as I use this bike as my work commuter too.

Any advice gratefully received!

  • Planet X Model Bs seem to get rave reviews. They're pretty light. £130.

I quite like Fulcrum 5s at that money - Merlin may get them close to £150

Was riding a planet x model b today. Not very strong IMO. Was getting plenty of brake rub on standing sprints/climbs. I've done loaded touring on shimano rs10s and friends likewise on aksiums. Those wheels are solid. No probs at all. I weigh 85kg btw.

Cannot go wrong with Aksiums. Not as light as model B's but strong and will last for years.

I've a few "cheap" wheelsets and the Aksiums are the only ones where the cassette hasn't been chewed to pieces, and they've been ridden the most.
  • Plenty of choice here, I have always had good service from them as well

I picked up these a couple of weeks ago and have been thoroughly impressed by them:

At that reduced price, you can't go wrong.
  • I kept my original ALEX wheels that came with the bike and use those for winter and commuting and keep the nicer wheels for sunny days.

+1 for Aksiums. Had them on the commuter for the last 2.5 years and they've done well. Also fast enough to do a 18 min lap of Richmond Park without feeling like they're letting the side down.

Very much liking the look of the Aksiums - only 20 spokes - is that an issue?
For some reason I am doomed to hit big potholes, buckled both wheels recently (which even damaged the tyre).

Probably should get round to trueing them soon

I use Model B's, for the money you cant go wrong. I'm not a big lad, but I can get them to flex when stomping up short climbs out of the saddle. Doesnt bother me too much though, they are much better than the Fulcrum 7's I had before hand. I'll probably get some decent wheels after winter, but for now, these are ideal.

Got RS30's and Planet X model B on my bikes and I think the Shimano wheel is superior if a little heavier. The model b's do flex a bit , the RS30's are rock solid. Good tyres are essential too!

Can't go wrong with Shimano RS20s. Well made and look great in the black version. 24mm rims which are a nice compromise for commuting and sportives. Weight in the 1800g region. Low spoke count but still strong. Shop around and you'll find them for 150quid.
