Tubeless Presta Valves

Hi

I have finally got round to purchasing UST tyres for my tubeless ready rims. Before Putting it all fully together I was just wondering if I need to really tighten down on the knurled nut to get the rear of the valve to really press into the rim? (The valve isnt attched to a rim strip) Is it a bit too much maybe using pliers? Just pushing it into the rim with my fingers as far as possible doesn't seem to of pushed it in very far and am concerned it won't seal when inflating the tyre.

Many Thanks

Russ

Are your rims actually the UST standard? What rims and valves so you have?

Usually finger tight as hard as you can go is sufficient.
  • They are Bonty Tubeless ready rims. The valves I purchased were Stans ones which I got when I bought the sealant as well. The bottom of the valve seems to have plenty of rubber so assume that it will seal ok. i sn't sure if I should be pressing it in harder or using the nut to pull it in tighter. But if finger tight has been good enough for yourself I'll gove it a whirl over the weekend. Ta

Pretty sure you will still need a rim strip with these, though should come with them.

I actually put a blob of sealant around the stem base to help it.
  • Ah slight problem there, I didn't purchase a rim strip.. Reason being that there seems to be a solid plastic section covering the area where the spokes would go through.. did see the valves attached to the strips, but assumed that as this seemed all protected I wouldn't need this. There is no rubber strip just this solid plastic all the way round. Sorry if I'm not explaining it very well.

Non UST rims often need a strip so the bead locks properly and becomes airtight. UST tyres and rims are specially made to lock together, and do not require a strip.

This is why I don't like this 'Tubeless Ready' moniker, most rims are with a strip anyway!
  • Thanks for your help. Just gave it a whirl after installing the valves and all worked ok.. Had to stick a bit of Stans around the rear presta valve on installation as slightly leaking. But all seems to be going sweet at the mo.
