I need a strong rim...

Can anyone recommend a strong 26" rim for DH/FR?
I need something stronger than what I currently have on the Canyon and I need them handbuilt by someone that knows what they're doing.
I'm planning on using the current hubs to save a bit of cost, but spokes and rims will be new.
Cheeeeers.

Ok, well looks like i'm going to get a superstar set if the rebuilt ones on the Canyon don't hold up (they're badly dinged and have bent spokes )
Seems the do have an adapter for the syntace rear axle
But, do I go for their downhill rim or their AM rim?
They say both can be used for DH, but the am is a fair bit lighter!0 -
If your doing DH the weight shouldn't really be an issue as your going down, AM will be lighter but not as tough, how serious are you with the DH that's the question you need to answer, If it was me i'd go DH that way your covered.0

I've spoken to Merlin Cycles this morning who have said that they can build only my current hubs (Sunringle Drift 2.1).
They've given a quote of £200 to build them with Mavic EX823 DH rims.
So what is the consensus?
Superstar wheels?
Merlin built on Mavic rims?
Supersonic - Any idea if there much difference between the EX823 and EX729?
The 729 is about £20 cheaper a wheel (total buid of £160ish).
I'm deffor leaning towards something from Merlin, the last set of wheels i had from them were stunning!0 -
If it was my money i would get a set built from Merlin, ive had a few sets from them and they've always been crackign wheels.
Superstar may be good wheels in their own right but my own opinion is that you cant beat a good set of hand built wheels.0 -
Which Superstar wheels are you looking at?
The 823 is a UST rim, and slightly narrower.0 -

Would have to be a switch hub on either the DH or AM rim... DB spokes.0 -
Hello just to be accurate:
"Superstar may be good wheels in their own right but my own opinion is that you cant beat a good set of hand built wheels."
Our wheels are handbuilt on a P&K Lie wheeljig (£1000 pieces of German lovelyness) in house, and our bulk builds (when we dont have capacity) are also hand finished on similar equipment.
823 rims are UST tubless and much narrower than 729. they are nice but not as strong as a 729 (bombproof)
cheers, Neil (superstar)0 -
Cheers Neil!
i knew SS were handbuilt, hence why they are on the shortlist!
Just waiting to see how bad my current wheels are before buying anything...0 -
I hand build mine using nothing but my beard and sense of smugness, but that is a different story...0
