I have started to look around at getting a new bike for next year and am interested in either a Colnago m10 or the bianchi oltre. Does anyone ride either of these currently and if so what has your experience been like. There's not a lot out there in terms of reviews.

Any comments, advice or guidance would be welcome

Let's be honest you're buying a way more expensive + better frame than you need, so it's about what you want. So which one do you want the most?

That's the thought process I went through when I was buying the last frame that was way better than I needed anyway.
  • all my bikes are better than my ability.... but regardless you're going italian - so whats to lose? having said that the Oltre nero with celeste detailing is stunning in the fleshhttp://www.epic-cycles.co.uk/images/bianchi-oltrenero-ult-1000.jpg

Both the M10 and the Oltre are made in the far east, so the best thing is to try both of them. The only way of knowing which one suits you.

Phil Cavell at cyclefit http://www.cyclefit.co.uk who are a Colnago dealer reviewed an M10 a while back (he didn't like it) and you can read the review on the site. Brian at TWMP also reviewed one http://www.thewashingmachinepost.net

Colnago aren't exactly renowned for their monocoque contruction. You're not getting anything special with the M10 beyond the Colnago paint job which is terrible simply because of the 'STRUCTURAL ROUTING' decal on the top tube. (However looking at their website i have an inkling that this decal may have disappeared on the 2012 models???)

Obviously the lugged construction Colnago's really give you something special, unique to the Colnago brand.

The Bianchi is far more distinctive and original in its design. Although the fork looks a bit weird and the mis-match blue anodized parts just look lame.

Of course i'm only talking about aesthetics because in terms of performance, you're going to get a very decent frame no matter which one you choose. The biggest factor to consider is obviously fit but frankly you can compare them yourself.

The geometry of these bikes is a little different, the Oltre is a little more stretched out with slightly longer reach relative to head tube size, so it's likely that one or other will fit slightly better depending on the size you need. I'd like to do more comparisons of the geometries, but Colnago never provide figures for head tube angle, fork rake or BB drop - apparently they are trade secrets... For that reason I would personally never buy one.

If it was me I'd go for the Oltre (very personal choice though) - unique looks and is supposed to ride very well.
  • +1 for the Bianchi. I am a bit biased but do think it looks lovely and no doubt rides great too. Not really into the Colnago brand. I'm sure they are lovely bikes to ride but personally find the frame shapes and colour schemes a bit boring.
