Can you imagine the scene in the car park if they ride for Orange? All those Audis with Atherton Project stickers...0

EWWWWWW GT0

hmmmm GT ... coulda picked a better team tbh, although tbf, there arent many top teams around who could, santa cruz, spesh, trek, giant already have big name teams to their names, and to cap it off, of the teams mentioned, all have atleast one rider capable of beating gee in the mens DH0

This does seem a bit weird to me, why pick GT?The story originated from Max Commencal's interview with VeloVert , where he said "they had the opportunity to go into a large structure, which is perfectly understandable". (from bikeradar's article)
What is this large structure? And what can GT offer in bike terms that Commencal can't?0 -
GT are much larger than Commencal, and will pay them more money. Apart from having a lot better bikes...0

i agree with you, apart from the last point0 -
I dunno, its probably a good move for them tbh.
Bigger company, more cash... could hopefully mean better bike development for the riders, better setup and better support at races?
I hope they don't lose their exposure though. One of the main reasons I like the Athertons is becasue of The Atherton Project films - you get to see them as genuine people, not just sports personalities. You hardly hear anything about any other riders on a regular basis and I think it's something that the sport needs.0 -
You mean like Hans Rey? ;-)0
-
I imagine Gt will have the cash to put some serious man power behind the team; just look at what trek did for Gwin this season and how that benefited his results. What We Achieve In Life, Echoes In Eternity0

GT have masses of cash: the parent company owns a few brands, and are keen to push GT forward again.
Pity the bikes cost too much at the minute.0 -

It may be, but you can't just make videos when under contract using a manufacturers goods! it would have to be sanctioned.0
-
GT have had some top riders in recent years across their team, so I'm baffled as to why some of you appear surprised about it. Brian Lopes, Jamie Bestwick and Stephen Murray spring to mind (the latter 2 in BMX circle)0
-
And Eric Carter, Mark Beaumont, Mick Hannah, and less recently, Steve Peat, Nico Vouilloz, Mirra, Miron, Scurra - are one of the most successful outfits of all time.0

of all time yes, my first 'proper' bike was a GT because when i was 15 GT were possibly the best brand out there. i went to see hans rey at the mountain bike show at the NEC and was blown away by the guy.
lately they've been lagging behing in the MTB world in my opinion. no offence to mark beaumont, but their off the peg full suss bikes have been a bit poo - again, only my opinion.
but like has been said above, with the athertons on board it'll hopefully lead to improved bikes with their input?0 -
You ridden the Fury?! I guess Hans Reys input just isn't good enough hehe ;-)0
-
hans rey is just good at bunny hops and stuff, bloody crap rider apart from that (joking)
i have in fact ridden the fury..it was OK, but expensive!0 -
Lol, well the factory bikes are heavily tweaked for the riders anyway - same geo doesn't always make it to the mass market.
IDrive system though works better than any high single pivot though IMHO.0 -
Wasn't the Fury also the first full carbon framed DH bike? Santa Cruz like to throw that moniker about but I was watching the Fury being ridden at Fort Bill a few years ago.
GT have the potential to be class leaders - though I never got on with their iDrive design, or the freedrive iteration. Good luck to em.0
