Hi All

Has anyone done the 'Parkamoor & Tilberthwaite' route from page 173 in the 'Lake District Mountain Biking Essential Trails book? If so, would you recommend it and I don't suppose anyone has GPS track they could send me that I could follow on my Garmin?

Cheers, Alesupper

Although I don't know the route from the book, anything with Parkamoor and Tilberthwaite in will be a very good ride.

If it involves Walna Scar just beware of the trail sanitisation that has taken place recently.
  • cammer - many thanks for your reply it is appreciated. Can you elaborate on what you mean by "trail sanitisation" please?

Walna Scar used to be a really fun, rocky technical descent down to the Coniston side. Recently the council got funds to 'Improve' the track making it more suitable for walkers and to help with drainage issues.

What this means in reality is that the track was completely re-surfaced and now is just a flat boring path that offers no challenge, and kind of makes Walna Scar redundant for me. At least until the path starts to erode back to it's former glory!

There are still plenty of superb bridleways in the area (Parkamoor in particular), but just like to warn people that Walna scar has changed very recently and may not offer what the guide books say.
  • Arrr I see what you mean. I've never been up there so it will all be new to me. Plus I'm a rodie just starting to get into mtb so a flat boring path will do just fine for me ;-) Thanks again.

When did they resurface Walna Scar road? I went down that around 3 months ago and it was same as always, a belting downhill.

You may find that Parkamoor Tilberthwaite ride on here somewhere:

Or a variation on it anyway.

I have done the section from the High Cross parking down to High Nibthwaite. That part of the route is fantastic (I haven't done the other side of Coniston yet). There is some flowy, forest singletrack to start. Following that, you come out of the woods to some great views over Coniston Water and some rocky, technical descending. Pay attention to the section right before High Nibthwaite - there are some jagged, steep rocks to drop down.

Would you be open to having another member in your party?

I have sent you a private message.

  • Haven't done that route in the book but have ridden both areas in separate rides. Both great places to ride, you'll have a blast!

    We did!
I have to admit, I am beat. It ended up being closer to 50 km than 40.

We certainly did and what a great route it is! I loved every minute of it. There were only two slights issues:-

    1) The bridge just north of Blawith is closed, well in fact it doesn't exist at the moment, so we had to ride down to Lowick bridge which is only a couple of miles down the road. See image here for closed bridge location...

    2) We took the wrong path whilst climbing Walna Scar. Make sure you take the path on the right side of the beck. See image here....

    Enjoy!
