road gears compatible with thumb shifters?

Was staring at my old Carerra Vanquish hack last night and decided to convert it to a flat barred road bike. It's an eight speed cassette with a compact two ring crank (all Shimano) - can I just hook this up with mtb thumb shifters?
FCN 5 belt driven fixie for city bits
CAADX 105 beastie for bumpy bits
Litespeed L3 for Strava bits

Smoke me a kipper, I'll be back for breakfast.

    I think you can get Sora thumb-shifters designed for flat-bar types. Summit like this:
