Recommended shoes for M647 DX pedals

I recently upgraded to Shimano DX (M647) pedals, and I'm not quite feeling the extra security benefits of the 'bear trap' type design. I'd like some recommendations on shoes.
I think part of the problem is that I'm using XC type shoes that have a hard sole with rubber sections round the edge.
I'm finding that I can't simply stomp my foot down on the pedal (remaining unclipped) and feel confident. Instead, either the cleat or the hard midsole of the shoe seems to rest on top of the SPD clamp on the pedal. Sometimes it'll slide a bit and rest on the nylon pedal 'cage', but that's still gives the sensation similar to when your foot slips off standard SPDs.
It makes me wonder if a softer, all rubber sole would make more contact with the nylon cage of the pedal when I'm not clipped in. I know Shimano do DX shoes, but to me, they look too much like chunky skateboard shoes. That's just my opinion, after all, I come from a world of XC/road shoes.

The M647 pedal is probably the worst pedal you can have for riding unclipped , it is the best pedal I have used for finding the cleat no matter where you put your shoe.
Having used many types of shoes with these pedals I dont think the sole material will make any difference.0 -

Oh, right...that's sort of what I'm finding out now. I guess I should have tried some first. You're right about clipping in being easy, although that was never a problem for me before with my XTRs.
But if anyone else can confirm, or suggest that a softer, full rubber soled shoe will give a more secure feeling (when not clipped in) I'd be interested to hear. There must be some advantage, given the right combination of pedal/shoe.
To recap, I do a mixture of endurance XC, but also like really steep technical, rocky stuff, so want to switch between being clipped in and then not clipped in, but still feeling 'sure footed' on the pedal body. I guess everyone wants this don't they !0
