Rucksack Ideas

I'm not so organised that I can put my essentials into my pockets, so have a rucksack in which w/proofs, gloves, pump, tools, clean shirt, spare tubes & most importantly, my lunch. Up until now, I have been using a Timberland freebie day sack type thing that is shoulder straps only and flaps/bumps around like mad.
I would like something water-resistant as although I have waterproof bags inside, sometimes I get caught out and nothing worse than arriving at work with a wet shirt for the day. Doesn't need to have a hydration system though that might be handy. Would be nice if it can be made smaller if not a great deal in it.
I mainly commute on a road bike, wear lycra but winter may find me on an mtb sometimes.
Budget is about £50 as I have an Evans gift voucher but can top up a bit.
I don't do dayglo!
Thanks

I had one of these for many years until it fell apart. Supposedly it is designed to fit ladies but I found it perfectly fine.
It's fairly roomy and if you need extra space there is a zip which allows you to add a few more litres worth. Was great for drips to the supermarket. I now have a Race X pack which is smaller so I need to be a bit more disciplined in the amount of junk I carry around.

Got one of these a couple of months ago.
I can really recommend it, feels comfy, a few storage compartments for keys/phone etc.
The helmet holder is useful, but more so for chucking a lock in there or something.
Also has a yellow rain cover with some reflective bit on it.
Can also be made smaller with some straps.
I'd buy one again if mine ever got trashed0 -

blacks own bag - almost 30l - with chest and waist strap to stop it jumping around...really comfortable (though some people dont like the banana backform (stops you getting a sweaty back) )
and half price at the moment £12 - bargain!0 -

And another +1. I've had mine for 2 years and it still looks new. I bought it second-hand as well. Every now and then I top up the waterproofing with some Nikwax.0 -
I have one of these and love it. not the biggest bag in the world, but very comfortable compatible with hydration and has some nice little features like helmet holder, fluorescent rain cover, zip pockets and side mesh pockets

and I added a lifeventure waterproof bag to go inside it for extra protection.

Might be worth price matching with Evans, Wiggle have it for less, so I suspect others will too.

I think they'll do it - I have really upset the manager in my local Evans my price matching on the fly with my iPhone in hand ... I saved 30%/£10 off a Park Tools chain cleaning kit that day.

OMM Classic Marathon 25L. I've almost worn mine out after a decade of commuting and running, quite literally using (and abusing) it every day. Very light and sits comfortably on your back. Worth considering as an alternative to the Deuter.0

I've had them match a £125 Gore jacket to £65. They looked surprised
Still, it keeps me going to Evans, they get more of my business than Wiggle.0 -
Probably similar to the Deuter Race but I recommend this

The keeping it away from the back is the main thing I want in a rucksack and stops a sweaty back for me0 -
I would have posted this a few hors ago, but I got transported off to Evans by following, got side tracked shopping, then got a bit of work to do, finished that and couldn't find the Forum tab, so opened another one had a read of some post, then found this one......again!
Blooming Web designers and their you don't need a tap or a new windows mentality....
Anyhoo I've got one of these, OK it's not waterproof, but I have plenty of plastic bags around the house. It can fit a 15 macbook in and clothes, I leave my shoes at work.
Apart from not being waterproof and over your budget,it fits the bill0 -

More expensive than plastic carrier bags, but lightweight and waterproof are these: http://www.lifeventure.co.uk/htm/packab ... -bags.html
I bought one to add to my rucksack, it's great and only cost £10 from Millets

Even cheaper, and more idiot proof:

Thanks for all your advice & suggestions folks. I've just wandered over to Evans and purchased a Deuter Race Exp Air (in grey) and had it price-matched to £44.98, so even got £5.02 change (in another voucher) for my voucher.
I'm happy with that
Feels v comfortable on my back and keep finding new features & thingys.
Shame I won't be cycling now until next Tuesday1997 Gary Fisher Big Sur
