Hi guys and girls.
First time on the forum, even though been bikin' for a while now. At mo ridin' a trek hardtail but lookin to venture into the full suss arena. Financially can't go too deep and just want summat to throw around but not too heavy. A mate of mine has got this 2004 stumpy but with vee's on it and always been used on road.It is an fsr but i would have to change wheels and put some half decent hydraulics on it. The shocks are, front: SID SL and rear fox float RL. They seem ok but may need pressure. It is in good condition with no wear evident in linkages or bb. He thinks it is still worth a fortune but i'm not sure. Any advice on wot its worth and brake kit to mod it?
Thanks. Steve :|

Whatever you are willing to pay - see rule 15.
Re brakes depends on your budget. If it's got mounts.

    Hello mr cooldad.
Don't take this the wrong way but i didn't ask for your advice on smilies. Of course it has got mounts and if i go and look at a second hand car, the guy probably won't say 'whatever you are willing to pay' for it. Obviously you can't tell me a rough figure for its age and condition. A bit sad really. Obviously i must have not adhered to rule 15. Fair enough the brakes question was a bit open ended. Silly me!

Can you provide us with full specs? Depends on the condition too. Can be costly if you have to change, drivetrain, mechs, or perform service on fork/shock. It seems like nice spec with the info provided, but it should not cost a fortune. Bike weight, and progress of technology should also be considered.

I didn't give you advice on smilies. It's in my sig. Don't take this the wrong way but your comment was a bit dense.

How the hell can anyone value something based on a vague description, even if it isn't against the rules.
Not being a jobsworth - posts get locked by mods for this, more of a heads up.

As for brakes - 'decent' is the same as how long is a piece of string.

    Hi mate.
I have looked on ebay for some ideas but as yet a bike like this has not come up. It is nearly 8 yrs old and i don't expect to see many. At the time i think it was a high spec piece of kit. The groupset, rear mech, front mech etc are all xtr. The vee brakes are avids, but not a patch on modern hydraulics. The frame is an m4,front shock, rock shox SID SL and rear fox float rl racing shock.I would put some air into them both to see if they are up to it. The seat post is titanium. Not sure on bars and headset. For its age it is in vgc and can't detect much play in linkages and bb.
To get it up to scratch it needs wheels(the mavics on it are not disc compatable)and hyd brakes. I Know it was a lot of money back then to buy one and compared to my 2006 trek hardtail it is light in weight. The only reason i am trying to get a ballpark figure is because he is that tight and looks after things too damn well! Cheers

Please accept my apology for being trigger happy. The smilies bit was just a bit of sarcasm and ok, the info was a bit vague. I was just trying to weigh up what i would roughly have to spend.

You can only try and make some comparisons of similar bikes off the likes of EBay.
If you budget £150 for a good set of wheels, £150 for brakes and £50 for the unexpected you’re up to £350.

Offer him £50 to £100 but I would not pay any more even if it’s in good condition.

£50 to £100? It's too low, in my opinion.

Which is why valuations are pointless.

Omegas, that was a proper response. Straight in 'BANG' with some numbers! Are you still in cheshire? Proper county. I'm in chester and do a bit in delamere and llandegla now and again. Cheers

Without a full spec a valuation is impossible.

I would stay away from an FS this old, no warranty, they were pretty heavy and flexy: a new Boardman for a bit more would be a better bet
