  • I've got a garmin edge and it is ace, records ascent and decent and pretty much everything else you could think of but not that cheap.

Phone apps like cyclemeter record both and they only cost a few quid.
  • You dont need to buy a Garmin to log climb/descent, you can use one of the route plotting sites like RideWithGPS for example to see how much climb a route has before you do it, also gives max gradient, all these sites will give a varying figure for ascent/descent , but then so do Garmins in my experience.

If you've got a gps phone there are are loads of apps.

Any of the garmin computers or bryton ones.

Basically almost anything with gps will log where you've been and show you on the internets. Or like ketterin boy you can draw where you've been on ridewithgps.com/bikehike.co.uk/bikley.com and that will show you, as long as you can remember where you've been.

  • I've had this for two years now and it works better than GPS systems in recording altitude and altitude differences

    Quite a lot cheaper

+1 for Cyclemeter; started using it 18 months ago and can see all the stats inc. road rides, MTB rides, runs etc. by year/ month/ week/ day....

It's also nice that you can view everything on the phone, no need to upload anything if you don't want to
  • thanks folks

do they apps not stop working once your screensaver starts, or the screen goes into powersaving mode? also does it not drain the battery on say a 3 hour cycle with the gps swithched on?
im on android can it still work for me? the images i saw wer for an i phone.

I've used strava, endonmondo and mytracks on Android. I think Endomondo is my favourite of those, now I've got a garmin though I'm using strava more. It works in the background so you can use your phone or lock it or whatever while you're out. It does drain the battery a bit but as long as you charge it before you go out you've easily got enough juice for 3 or 4 hours. I used to charge mine the evening before, go out at 6 or 7 in the morning for a couple of hours and not need to charge my phone until the evening again.

You don't need the internet on either while you're out and about.
