Bob Jackson Olympus Road - Tell me about it...

I'm looking at an off the peg 631. I like the fact that it comes in a size big enough for me - 62/63cm frame.

My riding usually consists of 60/80/100m solo, not at blistering pace. I'd stick an easton ec90 fork on it and full Centaur.

Anyone out there got one? Any illuminating comments?

Although off the peg, the current waiting time is 6-8 weeks from order. Hopefully will have a 24' in 853 to build up in December.

Great frame, I have had mine for about eight months. Went for the 853 upgrade. I have recently fitted a pair of Reynolds Ouzo Comp carbon forks, quite a comfort and stiffness improvement at the front. It is black with white lug lining, looks the business! Fabulous handling, really stiff feel to it. SRAM Rival, Kysirum Elites,FSA bars, Campag Power Torque cranks, Fizik full carbon Arione and Fizik Cyrano seatpost, Planet X cnc brakes, Ultremo ZX and Thomson stem 18.3lbs

Andy, was the Ouzo replacing a steel or another carbon fork - when I spoke with BJ they said the Olympus frame was designed to take a carbon fork over a steel one. I have the frame coming without forks and need to sort out headset and forks. Will probably go for Chris King headset and am undecided on forks.

Good choice on colour - I have ordered black and white lining.

Hi Mccaria, I replaced the steel fork that came with the frame, no problem with the steel fork just an easy way to loose the best part of a pound in weight..!! The Reynolds fork seems to fit in well with the frame, the colours match in perfectly :D I have a Hope headset but will get a CK at some point!! Got the fork from a guy on Ebay, £56 and free postage...

  • Sounds cool.

What made you guys opt for 853 over 725 or 631? Is there a specified weight difference for a given size of frame? Is the stiffness materially different for bigger units on bigger frames (13.5 stone here, prob looking at a 62/63cm frame).

Tbh I had thought the 631 would be perfectly sufficient but you've got me thinking.

    Oh and snaps? Please do!

Re 853; wanted the best tubing (excluding 953) for the stiffest frame. I'm 11 1/2 stone and ride a 53cm frame so its certainly stiff !! :D I will see if I can post some pictures at the weekend.

Similar logic to Andy - went for 853 as it is the higher spec steel (short of 953 and the new 931) and the price uptick didn't seem particularly steep versus the 631.

The 853 will probably be less stiff than a 631 frame using the same outside diameter of tubing.

Since all steels have a similar Youngs Modulus then the stiffness of the frame is mostly determined by the geometry, tube diameter and thickness.

Assuming the first two are the same, the higher strength steels allow thinner walls to be used, so actually a less stiff ride. Having said that, Reynolds make a range of tube profiles, so you may be best asking Jacksons what thickness they use.

I think the Olympus Road uses oversized main tubes though, so it is probably plenty stiff enough, and the 853 will be a bit lighter and more expensive!

Yep - when I spoke to BJ prior to ordering they confirmed that the 853 build is OS tubing and would be stiff enough on a 24' frame for someone who goes uphill slower and downhill faster than most other cyclists.
  • Where's the photos?

    I've oredered mine!
