I am looking into buying my first dropper seat post, I have looked all the big names i.e Crank Brothers and Rockshox Reverb but just going on reviews they seem either sloppy(CB) or too expensive(rockshox)

I have also looked at the Pure Racing i900r it retails at £200 so is roughly in the middle price wise but the reviews seem to be very positive with it lasting decent lengths of time with a good action. My only problem is I am confused with the sizing it would be the 30.9mm wide version stating it has 125mm or 5" but when i look at the manufactures website it says the 30.9 only has 75mm 2" less than the stated post????? Is this determined by the length of the seat post body and should not worry about it if it specifically says 125mm

Advice would be great as well as any user reviews especially long term use as I live in Cumbria and so winters are usually errrrrm CRAP!!!!!

Cheers

I have one and I ride in the Lake District. It's one of the best upgrades I have done on my bike.

New kid on the block http://www.bikechase.co.uk/index.php?p=232531 looks cracking price for a remote version.

Looks similar to the i900r (which I got from the same shop for £165, although they don't list them anymore), for which I used for quite a while with no issues whatsoever.
  • The thing with all the Reverbs that are in stock in the UK is they're the MMX mount version for Avid brakes. I would need the standard one, and got all hopeful when I read that it can be easily converted (just unscrew the MMX bit of the mount, apparently). But then I read what the distributor says:
"The standard bar remote versions remote lever has a stand alone clamp so it can be mounted alongside almost any brake lever regardless of which brand. The MatchMaker X (MMX) version is designed to work with Avid's MatchMaker X compatible brakes (Avid XX, X.0 and Elixir CR Mag disc brakes only at this point in time) to allow them both to be mounted off of a single clamp. The MMX remote lever should NOT be mounted to a bar by itself without an MMX compatible brake as this could damage the bar and lead to handlebar failure."

And given the price and the number that have needed warranty repairs I'm not sure I want to take the risk now. Rrgh.

I have a Reverb and I've also had a Joplin in the past, all dropper posts have some lateral play you can feel with your hand but you don't notice this when riding.

The reverb is a very good piece of kit, smooth and faultless so far, mine was a MMX mount you just take it off, also don't over tighten the remote, just enough so it won't move in use put will if you have an off (will stop it breaking off).

Alot of the problems were with the hose and how it connected, don't strap it the post, fasten it below your seatclamp.

Shop around I got mine for £162 of CRC, also the Giant one gets fab reviews and retails at £160

  • I've had the Reverb for a couple of months now. There is about 1mm of lateral play on the seat which has already been said, you don't notice when riding. I switched my lever from the left top of the bars to under on the right as it was going to get damaged when I have the bike upside down. The seat started to drop little by little a few weeks ago. When the pressure was checked it was way down and has been fine since being pumped up. I love it, as previously I could never be arsed to stop and drop my post, and it really transforms the bike into almost a trial type bike giving you confidence to tackle steep technical steps/drops etc. No more big belly catching on the seat or shorts getting stuck.

I have the Reverb and no problems at with it othr than needing bleeding but nothing I hadn't expected as most brakes need a good bleed when new. Despite my additional weight I haven't managed to blow the seals or anything else. I have the MMX version and shock horror it does fit onto my bar like a normal clamp and my bars haven't broken becuase of this.
There are a lot of people who have had problems but with the volumes that have been sold I wouldn't imagine it's too far above other dropper seatposts. The 2012 version which you can get from Rose bikes or Actionsports for little more than the Pure Racing post comes with revised internals which I haven't heard anyone complianing about.
Beaware that you will need at least 190mm of exposed seatpost to use the Reverb correctly.
  • Thanks Craig. I'm also thinking "so what if it needs a warranty repair, they're gonna know what brakes I had?". If bought from Germany does it mean anything like that would have to be sent back over there, or can you just talk to Fisher in the UK?
  • Isn't there a new offering from Giant that got good reviews and is cheap too??

The SRAM warranty I believe is international but I know people have sent items back to the retailer in Germany without porblem. Don't think they could link a blown seal in the seatpost to what brake levers you have and no idea how they would know what levers you were using anyway.

The Giant dropper seatpost has had some good reviews but is only available in 30.9mm

    Hi,

Had my "Reverb" a few months now and so far no issues fingers crossed. As for damaging my bars (MMX Mount) I am a bit unsure how this would be possible????????.
Must say best bit of kit I have brought for years, just love it.

  • Recently bought a ks i900 of eBay, 30.9 125mm travel, just had to replace the remote cable and clean up, so far it has worked fine no lateral movement and no issues with post dropping, not had it long enough to give a full review but so far it has been great and does the job.

See the link in my post above
  • Is the MMX designed for avid elixer R's
  • i cant see how the MMX thingy me bob would damage bars. all it is is an additional adaptor that you can take of the clamp by undoing a star nut, thus leaving you with exactly the same clamp as a non MMX version??

Isn't the new Fox Doss (drop on steep $hit) out soon ? mind you it will probably cost £300 or something stupid and need servicing every 1000 metres....
