Hey all

Have a bit of a query really! I already have a Giant Talon hardtail (100mm) and a Giant Yukon full sus (100mm) but am now looking at buying another full sus the reason being I will use the Talon & Yukon on local trails and then get something a bit longer for weekends away (just come back from Abergavenny) but am a bit unsure of whether I need loads more travel or not!

I have narrowed the bikes down to a couple of Ghost's with 120mm or am considering a Mongoose Teocali which has I think about 140mm.

Just a bit concerned that if I go for one of the Ghosts I am not actually increasing the travel by much and wont notice the difference but dont want some thing that has too much travel!! what do most people have on here? I dont do full on downhill riding but just want something that is going to be able to cope with everything I throw at it

You say you don't do DH, do you do any jumps etc? a lot could be down to the actual fork (dart2 on yukon?) not the amount of travel, mate has a yukon and has swapped his fork to a RS reba and the difference is fantastic.

  • No, dont do any jumps the Dart 2 is on the Yukon and its pretty crap to be honest so you think maybe that just buying a new fork might make a big difference? I did look at the Suntour Epicon as air and would be lighter but as I didnt pay loads for the bike didnt know if it was up to much abuse I have already swapped the brakes as there were mechanicals on there.

All depends on the riding you intend on doing, yukon will cope with most red route trail centres, but if you intend on doing more aggressive riding maybe a harder hitting bike would be better.

My mate does, Lee quarry, Cragg, Gisburn, Stainburn all on the yukon and just changing the fork was all he needed to progress, he doesn't do big jumps or drops.

  • Thanks for your advice I think you may have saved me some money I think I am just going to upgrade the Yukon.

He fitted a 120mm reba, so you could gain a bit more travel but you probably would be fine with 100mm, have you got a budget in mind for the upgrade?

  • Well I would prob say £250 max, can I fit 120mm upfront if only 100mm on at moment and also will it upset the bike as the rear is only 100mm?

It will make it a slacker geometry, so more stable going down but a bit harder going up, check with Giant but 20mm is not going to wreck your frame as your not jumping etc so I would stick to 100mm but your not me.

for £250 you can get a excellent fork, have a look at merlincycles.

  • That looks a great deal I think I will stick with 100mm as well so not to mess things up at least that way if I do break the frame then Giant cant state its because I put longer travel forks on!
Thanks for your help I appreciate it!
