How do I choose mechs that will fit?

Until now all I've ever done is ride, but the time has now come to replace some stuff.
The bike is 17 years old and was kitted out with a mix of Alivio/Acera. I've just had the chainset replaced with a new FC-M410 Alivio 22/32/42, new Hg50 chain and a new hg30 7 speed cassette.
The new components are showing up faults with the mechs and I want to replace both. I've looked at a couple of online retailers, but am just getting confused.
What do I need to look for when looking for a front mech? None of them state 7 speed, so will any do? None seem to mentiont the 42 top ring size, again does that matter?
Does the rear mech need to be 7 speed out can I pick any?
All advice and recommendations welcome.
Cheers,
Jamie

front mech are 3 speed as they only change between 3 rings, rear has to be 7 speed to be set up correctly if you are going to keep it simple for yourself.0

Rear can be any except 10 speed. Main thing about front is it needs to be the right pull ( top or bottom) swing ( high or low) and clamp size.I don't do smileys.
