1959 Black Cab U-turn ban

Apparently in 1959 black cabs were banned from doing U-turns by the Tory Transport Minister Ernest Marples, but the ban was lifted as the union promised no u-turns would be made during busy periods

And presumably the fact that the government had made a U-turn convinced cabbies that it was fine to do them too. Besides, there was no longer a law to stop them...
