looking at investing in some waterproof socks, looking at the sealskinz they say there made with merino wool, now i dont usually get on well with wool, i find it a bit itchy, can any one tell me if merino is like normal wool ?
is it worth getting thermal ones ? or just wear normal thermal one with aa water proof sock on top ?
also can any one vouch for the army surplus type one that are seen on ebay please.

  • the wool is fine in sealskinz, I have a pair of normal ones and thermal ones for the dead of winter.

just remember, they are only waterproof if water doesn't get in over the top of them (lots of people complain about this but don't realise that it happens).

No Idea on the ebay ones i'm afraid, but I won't hesitate to buy sealskinz in future

I've got the thermal ones (I'm sure) and they're good. I wear a normal sock underneath them though. Merino is a very fine wool, so shouldn't be itchy, I've also got a merino baselayer which is fine.

I wear merino baselayers in the winter, they're not like normal wool. Merino is nice. I also saved a lot of money buying army surplus waterproof socks off of ebay that are spectacular. Though, they are big enough to double up as a sleeping bag should I get caught out on the middle of no-where...

Merino is superfine and doesn't itch. They do fill up with water in really wet conditions sometimes, but even then keep your feet warm. It's a weird feeling, sloshy warm water.

  • Be very careful of wool 'waterproof', socks if they get wet on the outside they hold the water just like a sponge! although your feet stay dry they act as a great heat exchanger! when youre zipping along on a cold winter day you end up with blocks of ice for feet, I wont use them again, I have actually gone back to my old pair which have a neoprean outer, much better when used with a liner sock and Shimano MW80 boots which are awsome bits winter kit .

Be warned........speaking from experience !!

Except the merino doesn't work like that. They stay warm inside.
