Anyone got any of these?

Are they a decent winter tyre?
Good in the wet?
Good in the mud?
Grippy on rocks etc?

Been around for years, and like all tyres some love them and some (me included) hate them; heavy, slow and not very grippy. If you want a decent winter tyre at the moment check out the Dirty Dans for £20 at On One.

Great all round tyres that are good in soft ground and offer plenty of grip....you can get better deals on ebay such as a pair of the folding pro version for £48 posted and the wired for £35 again posted...the wire bead like any are a tad heavy.

I loved them 9 years ago as they were just better than anything else out there, but they haven't changed in that time. There are better tyres out there now.
  • Not the fastest thing out there, but loads of people I know run them (Pennines/Northumberland/Lothian). Good in the mud (though probably not as good as eg. Trailrakers) but a lot less lethal than Bonty Mud X's on wet rock.

I havehad them since sept, took them on monkey trail at cannOck chase this week. It was very slippy but these tyres were fine. I use 1.8 size which are pretty quick. I got the £15 deal on CRC :)
    Certainly reccomend them

I ran them all year round and to be honest I didn't think they were a bad tyre. Yes, better out there, but if you can get them cheap then go for it.

I run the Trailrakers through the winter purely due to the fact I never get punctures with them and the grip is superb, but getting to the trails which is about 5 miles on road from my house and uphill most of it is a bind as they are heavy and the rolling resistance is awful but there the tyres for where I ride as its really sticky glupey deep mud, as for speed i'm not really worried about that through the winter anyway as everything is far to wet to get the rate of knots up.

So you have to pay the price sometimes as whichever tyres you run there going to be better or worse in certain areas just way up where you ride most through the winter and buy accordingly, the minute I leave my house I hate it but when I get to the forest i'm smiling as they're doing the business big time.

  • I have a set of folding red pro version. Were used for a very short time before my mountain bike was sold, so very little wear. Am willing to sell if you wany to make an offer.
  • I used to think they were excellent a good few years back(8-10) until I tried the first nobby nics, which I found a load better, but they have probably been out classed now

i had them as winter tyres on my hardtail i can back up what people are saying, they are very slow rolling but do grip well in the slop. and the clear pretty quick too i had the cheapo 15 quid wire 2.1's so they were an awful hard compound, they didnt seem to wear at all.

but if you are thinking about using them in the dry weather dont, they are bad, plus if your an aggresive rider or ride on very abrasive surfaces you will start to tear the tread blocks.

  • I had the ZSG UST ones; they were pretty grippy but the back wore down to semi-slick after about 1000 miles (I'm not sure whether that's good or not).

That was what I remember of them, tearing lumps off the blocks!

I have the 2.1 folding tyres on my bike and they have been really good for all round use from bridleways to gritstone at the peaks. Only minor niggle is that I'm not sure they are as comfy as a larger volume tyre, but they do wear well and have done me proud, would still therefore recommend them.

Just bought a folding pair as winter tyres to cope with the sticky stuff. Read good reviews and at 580g not too heavy either. Considered conti's but heard bad things about the side walls. 8)
