Hi

I've had to replace by rear tyre [Continental Mountain King II] as I have had 5 punctures in 6 weeks and I have lost trust in the tyre [I am also going to replace the OEM inner tube with a 2.5mm+ one].

After about 3 hours on internet searching, and visits to 3 LBS's I have plumped for these - http://www.wiggle.co.uk/maxxis-advantag ... bike-tyre/

I mainly do road miles [60 or so a week] with a good 20+ miles at Swinley Forest at the weekend, so a good all rounder is what I need. I opted for the Kevlar due to the puncture issue

Enlighten me [and hopefully make me feel better about the purchase] - are these a good all rounder for what I need?

Kevlar refers to the bead, not that it is puncture proof.
Advantage are quite soft and will wear quickly on the road.
Also quite a chunky tyre, not what I would choose on the road.
What sort of punctures are you getting - often have more to do with pressures than tyre or tube.

Reading again it sounds like you have bought them, so I guess you'll find out.

  • Cheers for the answers

I was after an Ego boost to ratify my choice as being a good one ["typical bloke" my wife would say :)]

The punctures have been a variety - pinch, thorns, etc - the last straw was a combination of a thorn on Sunday near the end of a 24k Swinley trek, and a pinch on a 3 mile road trek with my 5 y/o son

I'm off to get a 3mm thick inner today from Evans to help the puncture issue

For what its worth, I ride MKIIs at Swinley with good quality, but thin as a gnats whisker tubes and have never had a puncture with them.

Punctures are a funny thing, you think that a tyre is weak but ultimately whats going to puncture one tyre will probably puncture another. I find better quality lightweight tubes offer better puncture resistance than heavy cheap ones. I think maybe its because the tube is more prone to give and deform when the thorns attack.

The real trick is to have the right pressure and your eyes open to avoid the offending puncturers before you ride over them. Thats what will stop punctures more than a tyre ever will.

That said, I did get a chance to ride the advantages at Afan recently (with Cooldad) and they were great.

  • I have been varying my pressures, riding on 40psi, 50psi and 30psi on both road and trail and still seem to get them.

Seeing as I am a newbie to MTB'ing perhaps the puncture radar needs defining and then refining.

What pressure are you guys running at?

I used Advantages for a while and relaly liked them. Excellent all rounder IMO, not too bad on the road, but I wouldn't want to be going far on road on them.
