Shimano Shadow Rear Derailleur Compatibility?

Hey,
Because I need a new frame, I was thinking of some other relatively cheap upgrades that would make riding more pleasurable. One idea was changing my rear mech to a Shimano shadow model (Deore M592 specifically) to prevent it from thumping the chain stay.
At present I've a 2006-7 LX model with the corresponding M580 shifters (link below). Would it be a straight swap of derailleurs or would I need to change anything else?

Cheers!

yes but it will not cure your problem."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Yep, it will be 9 speed Deore replacing 9 speed LX. Do you think there will be any need for a new chain or cassette etc?nicklouse wrote:yes but it will not cure your problem.0

and they seem to get caught in the spokes too often for my liking."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Replaced mine with a non shadow when it broke (I crashed so mech was not to blame) as it felt wobbly sooner than I would have liked. I put it down to the extra pivots but might have just been my imagination. Seemed to need more fiddling when indexing.I don't do smileys.

OK thanks guys. Think I will give one a go. Would SLX be worth the extra £10 over Deore?0

No.
The shadow in XTR+ may solve your problem though. But that's an arm, leg and shoulder and only 10 spd so will also cost you more else where.0 -

Er I think you missed a point somewhere - like in the first line - "relatively cheap upgrades"I don't do smileys.

Why not - that's exactly what it's designed to do, and it seems to work very well!
I'd echo others though and say don't bother!0 -
I must be missing something - what would XTR do over SLX, thought 'shadow' shape was the same.I don't do smileys.
