Looking for a new MTB and 29er help.

Evening all,
After spending many hours mooning over the reviews I though I should take the plunge and sign up.
As with most new joiners on here i’m looking for a new MTB after years for riding an old Team Saracen Fasttrack it is beyond economic repair.
As I understand it the usual recommendations are:
Carrera Fury
Decathlon Rockrider 8.2
Boardman Ht
All excellent bang for buck around £500 and often better than more expensive models/brands.
My budget is around £800 but can stretch for the right bike. As I have aspirations of improving my riding performance though a bit of street/jump practice and some freeriding I’ve been looking at the Marin B-17 as a possible best of both worlds that I can upgrade as required but still use for long runs on fire track etc.
Initially though my plan is to leave the bike stock unless I’m buying a cheaper bike and upgrading. I have also considered trying to get a cheap Spec P1 and a regular MTB but for storage reasons would prefer not to.
I’m tall (1.88m) and my recent investigations have highlighted the introduction of 29ers into many 2012 catalogs. Can someone please fill me in on what the design philosophy is behind this and whether they would be worth looking into.
Thanks for any help you can give.

29ers - roll faster once up to speed and roll better over bumps.
But are slower to get up to speed, are heavier and less responsive (and cost a few hundred more)
I'm looking at 29ers at the moment to compliment my existing MTB and have found that to get one with a decent spec costs around £1000 - £1500. That's a big stretch from £800.
However you would get a very well specced 26" hardtail for that price.
Do you want a well specced 26" or a half-decent specced 29er?
Personally, I would be looking at the new 26" (and there are lots of discounted 2011 bikes knocking about now).2007 Felt Q720 (the ratbike)
2012 Cube Ltd SL (the hardtail XC 26er)
2014 Lapierre Zesty TR 329 (the full-sus 29er)0 -

29er's in general would be a good starting place, not just a 'carpark' test either, get one on a trail with a bit of tech & twist if poss, you may find the whole 29er thing is just hype - or you may find there is something in it....
Maybe compare a similar 26" bike back to back to see the difference
Its probably not ideal, if you are not testing the 'actual' model, but will give you some idea of fit an angles to be looking for and the feel of a 29er...0
