Hardtail frame + build

I've been looking at the On-one Carbon 456 frame for £500 is there anything better out there?

I'm looking to build a bike for around £1100, I already have brakes and wheelset...

Would it be better to go for a cheaper frame and spend more on the other components?

I want something I can chuck downhill without worrying about breaking it but something okay for climbing too - for fun and fitness!

Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated.

Rob

I would look at a Blue Pig frame for £300, you can run anything from a 130-150 (have seen them with a 120) fork...look great, robust and 200 sheets cheaper so you will have £800 left for fork and groupset which is not bad.

I prefer the steel 456 to the carbon one tbh.

The carbon 456 is the only long travel carbon hardtail that I can think of though.
  • if i was in your situation buy everything you want first buy frame last its much harder to build a bike on budget around a frame otherwise you end up buying crap components to leave the cash for a frame

That's not a good way to do it in my opinion, as half the parts may not fit the frame you get!

Hmm I have a set of hope hoops (ZTR flow) and shimano m595 brakes to go on it.

Then i'm set on either an X7 or SLX groupset (double chainset) which should be around £280.

I'll budget around £150 for the finishing kit (probably have some bits I can swap over if necessary)

Leaving 670 for the frame & forks.

I've seen the on-one 456 carbon with a set of 140mm Revelation RLTs for £600.

I was hoping for a thru axle front fork though and they would be QR...

The 456 carbon would be my choice if the geo suits. A frame of that weight (3.5lbs) and that strength sets the standard. Also not as stiff as it looks, has quite a comfortable ride.

if you're looking for a complete SLX groupset then this is cheap as chips, my mate bought one a few months back, was delivered in 5 days

It was my original first choice - but the fact I could only afford it with a set of non thru-axle forks was making me question it.

Do you think I'd notice the difference between the QR and thru-axle version of the Revelation?

Thanks - I was hoping to go double chainring on the front but at that price I might change my mind and go triple!

Many people don't feel any difference - Ben on here is a good 16 stone and can't! I'd go for the deal, and see how you get on. Can always sell the fork if after, essentially you are getting it for 100 quid.

Very true - I think you just made my mind up!

Pay day tomorrow and then the bike building fun will commence.

Well I couldn't resist - I ordered it last night. Now I need to decide on groupset...
  • let us know how actionsports are, that SLX deal is very good and be interesting to see how their service is.

but i would advice buying frame first as everything else does tend to take second place after that.
