Also copper grease between the removable cup and shell.
  • Without buying more tools (or scaffold tubes etc.) I've reached what I can do.

Anyhow, I'm off work today. Phoned a localish bike shop and asked if they do BB's, yes for £35 fitted was the reply. So I took the bike over this morning, and ran home as a bit of exercise for the day! I'm now waiting for the call...I'm gonna be impressed if it's good news.

I'll get back to ya'll. Thanks for all the ideas, there is some real knowledge on here between us.

  • Got the call...they couldn't do it :(:(:(

Wouldn't budge, 2ft long spanner, tried standing on it etc.

I think my frame is going to bike heaven :(

Will need to start looking for a hybrid frame to transfer all my good bits onto.

The annoying thing is that the bike does exactly what I want it to, it is (was) mechanically perfect, rides great, looks very average - hence I can lock it up when I go running. Gutted really, but hey that's life.

This is starting to sound like a challenge...

    :-)
Sometimes parts break. Sometimes you crash. Sometimes it’s your fault.

One thought - could try reverse direction slightly, maybe the aforementioned 'shock' treatment to tighten, then shock it the other (loosening) way, try a few times ?
Since the BB is not so much overtight in the shell but seized that could effect the breaking of the seal on the threads ?
    Bolt tool to BB
Serious whack with hammer/rubber mallet to tighten then reverse the direction of the attack.
Could also see if pouring lube (diesel maybe) down the seat tube would reach the threads of the BB given some time to soak.

Can it be donated to the the silly commuters of the UK? Even i'm interested and I don't even care!
You are allowed one night and the following day only with it, a camera, some candles, barry white and whatever you have in your shed.

    Winner gets some satisfaction.

I'm game. But, how do we re-seize it for the next fool to have a go?

EC, I think you are looking at this the wrong way. That crank is the cycling equivalent of Excalibur! Take the frame to the SCR Christmas party, and whosoever removeth the Crank from yon BB shall be the Chosen.
Or, set it as the perpetual trophy for the SCR stats.

Cue: multiple tales of "that yonder bastard don doth extracted Excalibur only because my mighty strength had loosenedeth it for him".

Mayhaps, but it was ever thus. There's always some Johnny-come-lately around to take all the credit.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to heat it to help extraction, because ally is a very good conductor of heat, far better than steel. So while the ally dissipates the heat away from the BB area, the steel inside will be heating up more, and expanding faster, making it tighter in the frame.

So logically, cold would be your friend here. How big's your freezer? ;-)

  • Still haven't given up! Dropped some diesel down the seat tube last night and after I have used it at the weekend I was start storing the bike on it's side and drop diesel over the BB. I can't dump a bike just 'cos somethin'gs stuck! I'll give up when I bust something!

Silly question. But there are two sides to a BB, why not take other side off and replace bearings from the otherside, is that even possible?

So neither side BB cup will budge?
Just read this thread... and just to eliminate every possibility and to add to the Google-able knowledge base for anyone in the future, ... may I ask: are you the orginal bike owner?
It hasn't had its BB shell re-threaded by a previous owner?
I have a `70s frame, that, because of original thread damage, was rethreaded to Italian BB threads which is a slightly wider diameter.
BUT, and this is a big BUT....I'll let Sheldon Brown say it:

Sometimes, bicycles which have damaged bottom-bracket threads are machined out to Italian size to eliminate the damaged threads. Italian bottom brackets, like the French, use a right-hand thread on both sides, so the fixed cup is prone to loosening up unless very securely tightened or secured with threadlock compound.

So, if you aren't the original owner, it may be worth trying to turn the drive side cup the other way... for a change.
