Hi,

My girlfriend is thinking about taking advantage of the 'Ride 2 Work' scheme with her employer in the near future, and they are signed up with Halfords (shudder). She's looking at spending up to £500 on a hybrid for her commute to work (approx 2 miles each way). I've had a brief look around on the Halfords website and spotted this - Boardman Fi Hybrid Comp Bike 2012

I've heard good things about the Boardman bikes so was wondering if this is a good model for the price or if there is anything else Halfords sell that is worth a look over?

Thanks in advance!

The Boardman is good, but is she sure she doesn't want something else? If the commute is only 2 miles she could do that on a mountain bike very easily, if she wanted to take up MTBing for example. Same with a road bike.

  • I was in a similar situation a few months back, I too did not want a halfords bike, so they managed to source me a Specialized Sirrus Sport for the RRP, and I got that through the scheme. worth asking if they can source you something, I think the email address is
    cycle2.work@halfords.co.uk.

must say, havent been happier! I love my sirrus!

bails87 - To be honest, she's totally open to options (within the R2W scheme) but she has no wish to ride off-road or anything like that so purely looking for a commuting bike.

Tegglington - sourcing other bikes through Halfords sounds interesting and certainly opens up more options! Is this the model you went for in the end? http://www.evanscycles.com/products/spe ... e-ec023871

I guess if I can source other bikes through Halfords, it opens up the question of 'what's the best commuter hybrid bike for £500?' Any additional input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!
  • yar - I actually went for teh Sirrus Sport 2012 which was released in september http://www.evanscycles.com/products/spe ... ery=sirrus 2012 can not fault the bike, has taken me to and from work everyday with no problems, even over some rough pavements with tree roots popping up etc. Wery sturdy and smooth to ride. It came prebuilt in a box and was delivered by a courier, all I had to do when opening the box was attach the pedals and turn the handlebars 90 degrees. Had it delivered to work and cycled home that day on it!

At £500 the best bike is likely to be a Halfords bike

She is going to spend £500 on a bike... to ride... 2 miles?

That is completely insane. Can you talk her out of it? She could get a bike from Freecycle, or out of the local paper, or Ebay or whatever for a fraction of the cost.
  • Spend a much money as you can on a bike. As a good bike will last. Not like a cheap bike.

Also you feel good riding a NICE BIKE

Exactly - I mean 2 miles is a 30 minute walk for a reasonably healthy person. Or a 20 min (or less) jog. But do it on a bike - spend the money and sell it if you hate it!

Although remember the tax implications of selling a R2W scheme bike if you've not owned it for more than a few years.

This is an excellent bike for the money if it fits. Looks like they also have small sizes too. Very well specced and discounted. You could put on some slicks if the whole journey is on road...
