I bought a second hand bike with an expensive chain with hollow pins. When it's dead can I change it with a normal chain tool? Or are there any tricks I need to know about.

you use a chain tool to remove a dead chain! I use some quality cutters.

but yes a normal cahin tool will work.

And replace it with a KMC or Connex, both of which have joining links that are break-able by hand and re-usable. The SRAM 10sp POwerling is not really re-usable though it can be broken using a pair of pliers (or the specail Park Tools tool)
