Preparing for worse weather

I have light waterproof(ish) clothing and some warmer under clothing but I really need something to protect, preferably for heat as well as water, my Bontrager road shoes. They're SPD shoes, so a cover would require a requisite hole, but I'd be grateful of some shopping assistance.

I use two thin pairs of socks with a sandwhich bag in between. Today I went through heavy rain, gales and streams running at the side of the road. Feet stayed dry.

Another option is waterproof socks.

+1 for the waterproof socks. Use sealskinz'sfor off road and so far feet have remained dry and generally toasty

Thanks for all of the recommendations and advice, love the simplicity of the sandwich bag one. I wonder how many sandwiches my foot measures in bag department?

Do your feet not sweat horribly? Sounds like a recipe for athlete's foot. OK as an emergency measure but not something to do regularly I'd suggest.
