The Viking Torino looks the best. It has carbon forks.

    The Coyote looks nasty.

    Cheers.

I think the bike in the link above is supposed to a decent budget road bike.

Th Barracuda is the best brand and has a wide range of gears for a novice rider, but you are buying low end. Hope this helps
  • i take it the coyote sucks then?

    ok ill rule that out

any other suggestions in sub 400 bracket?

Sorry Oliver, to labour a point, if you are a beginner why are you ruling out second hand?

My fear is, you might buy one of them and it could put you off cycling for the wrong reasons.

I'm coming across as bit of a bike snob, it's not my intention. It's just that I started off on poor new bikes and I certainly wouldn't do it like that agin.
  • yeh i think about second hand but im such a noob with bikes i dont know which second hand bikes are any good plus theyre is neve rnay good ones where i live, i check gumtree and ebay theresa few...

i think its between the decatholon, carrera TDF or the Viking torinoSP?

How about one of these, they don't look bad at all and in fact are quite sweet looking on a shop floor:

    http://www.falconcycles.co.uk/Corporate ... rium.shtml

Might be able to get one of those for £400 if you look around enough. In fact I think Evans are doing them for £315 if you can fit a 50cm.

In fairness even second hand, I don't know what £400 will get you although have a look for a very recent thread on here about a guy building up a super lightweight Scott on a very tight second hand budget.

Have you any mates who are into cycling who can help you?

Cycling a great hobby but it's hard and with the wrong bike it can be even harder and not so great.

Perhaps for your first bike you should go in person to a bakeshop and get their advice.

I'm not helping with your choices am I

There are good deals on 2011 bikes if you search google.

If you can stretch the budget to £425 you can get the 2011 base model Trek:
    http://www.southdownsbikes.com/products ... &vid=29895

    £446.25 base model Giant:
    http://www.behindthebikeshed.co.uk/4589 ... _medium=Pr

    £449 base model Specialized:
    http://www.mcconveycycles.com/store/pro ... 54cm-2011/

Whether you can get one of these deals will depend on your frame size, which being new to road cycling you probably don't know. You can probably find all these models in local bikes shop who should be able to advise you on the sizing. Whether they will be willing or able to price match is another question.

Whatever bike you get its important to get the right size, so don't be tempted into any offer if they don't fit properly.

P.S I no its annoying when people suggest bikes outside of your stated budget! You can find all these bikes 2nd hand on e bay, make sure you pay cash on collection though and make sure they really are well looked after.

EXAMPLE (Although they don't have much feedback history):

...and the bakeshop will probably recommend the custard tart or victoria sponge! (which to be honest might bring more enjoyment than the OPs suggested purchases)

Go secondhand at that price mate!

Very much so depending on your definition of cheap. In this case, yes.
    Faster than a tent.......
  • £400 will get you a Giant Defy 4 2011 model from All Terrain Cycles, a little more will get you a Defy 3.

Just bought the Defy 4 last week, my first road bike for 27 years & pleased with it, I got a great deal from LBS, I was tempted with Claud Butler by the price until I tried Specialized & Defy, just no comparison so I shelled out the extra few quid, Defy just suited me better once I was on it.

Don't just look at the price, try it out first & get it set up for you.

Good luck with the bike & get out there on it & enjoy
