Is the skewer tight and of the correct size? Is your wheel buckled and wobbles on rotation?

Is your headset done up tight?

I was thinking headset but he said it was shuddering at the bottom. That would make you think the wheel was just loose. If it was the headset you'd feel it in the handlebars...

If the headset is 'loose' the bottom still moves back and forth!

This, it will be more visible at the bottom than the top

not had much chance to look at it today but think headset may be the problem as soon as you pull the brake you can feel it juddering thought it was doing it more when forks were turned up to 140mm but its just the same at 95mm.

pull your front brake and rock back and forth on the front wheel, if it's the headset, you'll feel knocking around the head tube, and you should be able to see the fork crown moving in relation to the headset cups.

well no wiser at the moment headset seems ok,forks seem ok,wheels tight, rung local bike shop the mechanic said it could be a case of contaminated disc pads or caliper could have been knocked and be out of alignment and pads wore down at wrong angle

Swap the pads and clean the discs. This is a cheaper option than doing anything else. Even if it's not the pads you'll still need some in the future anyway, so you can carry on with the old ones if it's not the pads.
  • It really sounds like your headset is not tight enough. Loosen up the bolts for the stem, so that it turns freely in comparison to the forks, and tighten the top cap down to make sure everything is tight, then tighten the stem back up, and see if it still moves around.
