Is there any point in removing old tape before putting on new?
What do you do?

Take the old stuff off or your bars will end up stupidly fat.
    More problems but still living....

Do you take your socks off before putting new ones on?!

Seriously - at what point would you start taking the old tape off - when the bars had an effective radius of 6 inches? One existing layer of tape might be useful for padding if you find the feel of the bars a bit buzzy but I can't think of any other reasons to keep the old tape on barring extreme laziness!

  • ++Take it off! Technically you can run two layers (double wrapping), but you can get gel inserts with a tape kit for about the same price but these will dampen vibrations much better.

Tip: When you're wrapping the tap, concentrate on keeping the spacing on the outer edge of the bends uniform, the rest will sort itself out and if you do screw it up you can easily take it off and start again.
  • Thanks I'll take it off!

I have to admit that I sometimes don't bother stripping off wallpaper before I put new up - hangs head in shame..........

You'd probably run out of tape before you'd finished the bars if you don't take off the old stuff.

And always start from the centre.

no, start from the bottom, then you dont roll the bar tape back when in the drops....

My house is like this & multiple layers of paint. I could cheerfully kill the fekkers that did it without a single twinge of conscience as its taking me an age to get it back to bare & do it right.

On topic, I left a double layer on my CX bike & it felt odd & hurt around my thumbs with the extra stretch
