Hi Folks

Sorry if this has been covered off recently but I am looking to buy some new winter tyres and could do with some advice.

I am after some which has a good amount of off road grip in forest trails, especially on things like wet boardwalks and good overall cross country performance.

Not too bothered about road/hard surface performance as I am more concerned about staying on the bike on the off road stuff.

Thanks for any help.

Col.

  • I'd go for a set of either Maxxis swampthing's (wired have always been fine in my experience and cheaper to buy) or my mate swears by Bontranger Mud X i think theyre called - he leaves them on all year round so they cant be that bad. I dont think they are too expensive to buy either.

    Just my opinions mind 8)

I have a Swampthing for wet rides, Bonty Mud X gets a lot of name dropping round these parts. In that respect, Andy /\ has it covered!
Also, the Maxxis Medusa looks a good tyre, is cheap, but only goes up to a 2.1 size.

You'll also get some people who keep their Summer tyres all year and say 'just change your riding style'. That's the cheapest option and certainly something I did for a long time!

I've just put on a set of Maxxis Minions 2.3 super tackys for the winter, grippy as hell but so slow compared to my summer tyres ( i run Ardents through the summer)
You only get one shot .........so make it a double !

Sorry for the slight thread jack...

How do you know what width to go for? I want some different tyres for the winter as mine aren't good in mud/very wet conditions. Currently have 2.2s. DO you slim down or fatten up for winter?
  • Thanks all for the advice. I've got some shopping to do!!
Would be interested in knowing what people think about RLyons width question. I've heard that it is best to have a fatter tyre at the front (also, my bike was delivered like this) but I thought that the fatter tyre would be better on the drive wheel to get more grip.

    Thanks.

I was led to believe a slimmer tyre, such as a 2.1 but I'm no tyre expert.

Thinner cuts through claggy stuff to firmer base, fat floats on top. Generally for a mid tyre narrower is better, but it'll depend a lot on your mud and conditions.

Mud Xs are excellent, although On-One are doing Dirty Dans cheap, they're basically a far lighter Mud X. Durability won't be superb though, so I'd avoid if you ride a lot of rocks.
  • Mud X 2.0s.

They are great in the slop. No question. But they're quite draggy and have a distressing tendency to let go on wet rock - I gather this is common to most mud tyres though?

Cant believe no one has mentioned the Panaracer Trailraker. It has been the top choice for winter rides for years.
