Help-Chain/Rear Gear Problem

Hi :)

I'm looking for advice on a recent problem with my mountain bike.

Forgive me for not knowing the exact terms of the various parts but the issue relates to the arm on the rear gear (it has a small single wheel which guides the chain). The gears change fine and I had a brand new derailleuer ? fitted only 5 months ago, but last few days I noticed as I'm cycling, on not peddling there was a loud bang comig from my chain/gears. I soon discovered that every now and thewn this chain arm mechansim (which is on a spring) is moving forward, the chain goes slack, then ke-boom it snaps back with some major force.

Can anyone please tell me what's happening here? What this problem is? Can it be resolved without too much difficulty? If I take it to a bike shop can I expect to pay a lot for it to be fixed?

Hope someone can help. Thanks.Erainn

sounds the free wheel is locking up.

time to have the hub looked at.

    Thanks for you advice.

Presumably either the hub and/or the freewheel being replaced will fix the problem.

What specfic items would I need for a Giant Boulder FS ?

    Depends on the hub.

You can probably just remove the freewheel, clean and lube it.

Thanks for that advice. Took my Giant Boulder FS to the local bike-shop to be looked at.

After thinking it was a chain issue (loose) the guy saw it was a freewheel problem, and proceded toa pply a lot of lubrication to it. Hey presto! Seemed to do the trick, but he warned that the freewheel is a touch worn and needs replacement, he went on to say that you cannot just replace that in isolation but would need a chain replacement and main drive cogs replacing also. 'How much?' I asked 'Oh! 'Including labour and parts, around £90, with added service could be £130'

At that point I nearly grew a beard :)

Does that sound like I'm being fleeced?

Do I really need to replace all thise items, or would replacing the freewheel be sufficient?

Anybody advise on what freewheel would be suitable for a Giant Boulder FS?

    Thanks

For that you could get a new wheel, cassette and chain.
But no reason to change everything if it just needs a new freewheel.
