How to put maps onto garmin edge 500?

Hi, wondering how to put maps from ( map my ride) onto my garmin edge 500? Please hep!

Strictly speaking, the 500 doesn't support maps.

Do you mean the turn by turn directions?

You can add a 'course' - basically the directions without the map.

You can now plan your routes at Garmin connect and download it to your device direct. It's therefore in the correct format to save having to mess about.

I find http://ridewithgps.com/ very useful for planning routes and it supports exporting the route in both GPX and TCX format which is what you need for the Garmin Edge 500 and 800. They also have this useful help on how to put the file onto your Garmin.

So just to check this as a newbie to Garmins, Can you download a route you've already planned online/pc to a 500 and it will give you a route to follow or at least directions?

I was under the impression only the 800 would do that?

The 800 is a full sat nav with maps just like your car sat nav.

The 500 will allow you to draw a route on a web site, export that to a file which you then put on the 500. It will then give you a simple line on screen to follow, showing you approximate turns without any underlying map data.
