I want to buy my other half a bike for Christmas, budget of approximately £250. It'll be used mainly for heading into town (1.5 miles) and the odd ride up to 15 miles (although this may increase if she gets the bug) over a mix of road and tow path. It's relatively flat where we live so a minimum of 3 gears. I'd want the bike to be in good condition as it's a present. Thoughts???

Gumtree or ebay, alternatively speak to the LBS's to see if any have a trade ins.

Sorry - couldn't resist this(you did ask for" thoughts")

Bike = secondhand "do anything" lady

Anyhow, yes, Gumtree is a good bet. What was that secondhand bike website called? Also, some police stations have sales of recovered & unclaimed bikes (Cambridge being one)
