I am in the market for some hope hubs and wheels. Unfortunately I have no idea of what to buy and although several come up on STF.

Can someone give me some simple advice please.

There are Pro2 / 3 hubs, different skewers etc - 12 or 20mm, what is the difference etc

thanks

sam

it depends on what you are wanting to fit them to.

axel widths and frame spacing are the most common numbers.

Silly questions but are the widths what I have now and the frame distance measured with a ruler?

    thanks

  • Nope, they are measured using the number of fingernails you have cut off in the last year, end on end. Hope you saved some

Back to being serious, what frame, fork and type of brakes do you have? and what kind of riding are you doing?

  • What are you replacing?

Some wheels are fitted to forks with an axles some with skewers, the 12 or 20 refer to these type of fittings.

I bought some Hope Pro 3 hubs fitted to some Stans Flow rims so I could run tubeless tyres. These are fantastic compromise over strength and weight I love them to bits, although they are noisy when freewheeling a little too posey for me, have a think if you want to see some wildlife on your rides! : )

Have a look at Mavic Crossrides, slightly cheaper and just as good a build as Hope, although I choose Hope as their Customer Service is second to none.

If your not sure what you need ask your local bike shop. Happy buying!

Do all Hope rear hubs sound so bloody noisy when free wheeling? My mates drive us both nuts regularly.

I love mine :) It does make you pedal more as everyone around you know when you're slacking off, lol.

And you never have to worry about walkers not hearing you as you approach them :)

To stop the noise you can grease the freehub pawls and springs if you want to

Fair enough. Really fancy the below wheels for an upcoming bike build but the loudness has been a little offputting.

Yes. That's part of what you're buying Hope hubs for. It can be useful though when approaching walkers, though stubborn ones will hear you and either not get out the way or will deliberately pretend to be shocked and then still shout at you for not having a bell.

Silent hubs don't give them a chance. Stealth mode, shoot past and leave them for dead whilst they shout at you.

Prefer the ninja style approach so will probably go for a mavic rim on a shimano hub.

it depends on which boardman it is.

they can be any of the standards.

but if the normal Qr fitting then 135mm OLD for the frame and 100mm OLD for the fork.

axle diameters are front 3/8" or 9mm and the rear is 10mm. (not a thru axle though).

Do you currently have standard QR skewers on the bike? If so then the standard Hope hubs will be fine. The wheels come with standard QR and 20mm converters when you get them and you can buy 9mm or 15mm conversion kits if you need them

I bought a set of Stans flow on hope evo 2 hubs and then bought the 9mm conversion kit as my stumpy FS used a DT Swiss 9mm skewer

Also, don't get confused by the from QR sizes. The slots in QR forks are usually 9mm BUT the skewers are 5mm. The 9mm skewer I mentioned isn't "normal" but gives me a thicker/stiffer front end over the standard QR, without having to change forks.

The wheels will come as standard with the correct adapters fitted in that case

No it doesn't, it makes me pedal as little as possible so that everyone around me thinks that I'm super-fit and not having to work as hard as them!

It also scares the living daylights out of slower riders when you get up behind them on the descents :)

Yeah, it's strange. When I first went looking for a decent FS bike in 2008 I tried a Marin with Hope hubs and HATED the noise, but got myself some this summer and LOVE them now.
  • Yeah I love the noise as well, and they are very decent hubs.
