What does it not do that you want it to do?

Upgrade the things that make a difference to how it feels in use. Gears typically don't make a difference to how it feels, but the shifters do.

Grips, shifters, brakes, tyres, saddle, forks and tyres make the biggest difference to comfort and performance.

Wheels and frame, gears and cranks are important, but less so than the rest in terms of ride quality. An okay frame with good forks will feel better than a great frame with average/poor forks IMHO.
  • cheers any advice on forks? how do you choose them lol
  • Hi,
I too have a GT Avalanche 1.0 Disk and have upgraded it.
I recently bought Rockshox Recon Gold RL coil forks from Merlin & they have made a massive difference to the feel of the bike.
I think On One are doing the solo air version of the fork for a similar price atm.

The only other things I changed not long after getting it are the tyres which made a big difference as well and also the pedals.
Mine has Tektro Auriga Comp breaks and although not one of the big names, I think they are fine and I'm not going to upgrade them at the moment.

I'm going to see how it goes & will replace things as they wear and may upgrade further or may just save for a new bike in a year or two's time.
Certainly changing the forks & tyres have made the bike feel much better tho..

As others have said upgrade what you need when you need it, my expert only has original frame forks, stem, bb front mech and crank now. First things I replaced were wheels (too badly buckled) then brakes (juicy 3's were crap and howled), I replaced every part with a much improved part, last thing I changed was the headset when my forks went for repair and service.

As stated above, I would start with the tyres for your first upgrade. Speak to LBS about riding you do and they will recommend something for you. That was my first upgrade and made a big difference, although would like something with more volume now for comfort as recently recommended to me.

I had an Avalanche 1.0 disc and the forks are crap. I upgraded mine to Reba and it transformed the handling. The Auriga brakes are pretty good, a little awkward to bleed but you aren't going to get much better without spending a lot of money.

Stock tyres are bad, this would be the first change I'd make (had the same bike for 6months)
