I'm getting one or the other and just wanted a bit of advice.

I was thinking of getting the MTB ones as at least you can walk around a town (I tend to pslit my rides in two) but didn't know if there was a downside. I can only think of weight and sole stiffness.... image isn't really a problem (I don't have one!).

Any thoughts.. they both look a great value shoe

I've got both and would say it depends on which pedals your using, if your using road specific SPD-SL then you need the road shoes, if your using MTB style SPD's then either, if you tend to do a bit of walking then the MTB ones will probably be slightly better, but it's not going to make a huge difference.
  • I used the MTB shoes on my road bikes and MTBs last year and they were fine. Unless you're racing I don't think there's much in it between the shoes.

The only thing I would say is that when I had recessed cleat MTB shoes and SPD pedals I found that the pressure from the pedal gave me foot pain. When I swapped to road shoes the pain went due to the stiffer sole.
Where would you be if you fell down a hole?.. Stuck down a hole... in the fog... Stuck down a hole, in the fog, at night... WITH AN OWL!
  • okay I'm getting a picture now - can I ask you all if

    1. the MTB are comfy enough to walk in
    2. whether the MTB sole is stiff enough
    3. Is the MTB shoe a lot heavier

I erring on the MTB shoe side but not if the above don't fit.

Sounds like a hybrid is needed ;)

I have the MTB ones. I got them as I do a bit of both ie Road and MTB. They are fine as starter shoes. Yes you can walk in them, even on the kitchen tiled floor. They are stiff enough for me and cured my "ball of foot" pain I was getting from riding in my trainers. For forty five quid you cant go wrong really.

I have a pair of the MTB shoes you link to
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/dhb-m1-mtb-shoes/

They are perfectly comfortable, light, stiff and easy enough to use for me - but then I've never used SPD-SL Road Shoes so I can't compare the 2.

They certainly are easy enough to walk around in, although you wouldn't want to "go for a walk" in them as the sole is stiff.

for road, go road shoes, the cleats provide a large area to apply downforce thru and the sole is firmer for your feet to push thru.

    1. Yes.
    2. Yes.
    3. No.
  • thanks to you all, I went for the mtb shoe, will let you know how I get on.
  • I have the Shimano MTB shoes. They are stiff, and you can walk around in them. Can't fault them with my spd pedals.

I have just got the MTB shoes and will be using them for commuting on my hybrid, so hoping they will ok too.

They feel REALLY stiff on the sole though

    They're meant to be stiff.
