I thought about snow, seems a bit extreme to have one in your stock bike catalogue though. Are Surly from Nova Scotia or something?

I think I want one, be class for commuting. Especially if you have to cross any sand dunes :D

You could probably go straight over the traffic in one of those...

There's a cassette on the front wheel?!

I assume it's for a spare, at first I thought it might be AWD, now that would be amazing on a winter commuter

Not a bad idea having a second cassette. Not so much for the cassette but for a spare freehub given that the rear one would freeze first. Presume that's why they did it. That is a special built to order bike though so might be customer spec.

Broaden your mind dude! There's a whole world of riding out there! You know they have these bikes with, like, suspension that you can totally ride OFF road too...? And, and, there are some bike that have ANOTHER position behind the usual one for a whole other person to sit and pedal...wtf?

Y'know, if I had more money, I'd definately get one of those.

Surly Pugsley as in pig ugly,a bike company with a sense of humour? clearly they dont make road bikes, built for crossing sand rather than snow, the idea of the front wheel having a cog is that if in the middle of nowhere your mech breaks you just take it off and swap the wheels round. There is an excellent film on Uchoob of 4 guys following the Alaska coastline on the these things.

Pugsley is a character in the Addams Family, isn't he? Makes more sense to me.

Re. the spare cassette on the front wheel - in conditions that would freeze a freehub solid (and I assume you've put the right Winter-rated grease in it), how much fun is it going to be to try to swap your wheels round, and will the QR work anyway? I once had a freewheel seize (not freeze) on me and I rode home as a five-speed fixed wheel. Not fun but easier than swapping wheels in a blizzard!

Re the front wheel cassette, I reckon the Moots is like the Batmobile. If the rest of the bike gets wrecked by cold weather, RPGs or what-have-you then the front section detaches and you ride off on a really cool all-terrain 9-speed unicycle.

FFS, it's simple guys! If you knacker the freewheel out in the extreme middle of nowhere, you'll die - so they put a spare one on. Seriously, watch some Michael Palin documenteries or something!

No... I pretty sure it's the unicycle thing. I haven't seen any Michael Palin documentaries but have you seen The Dark Knight?
